Potential Project : twin pick up Esquire !!

Christmas is around the corner.
That means 13th check and a bit of extra money . . . kinda.

I am playing with the idea of a custom build Esquire with TWO bridge pick ups.
The '1st draft idea' is a 1/4 Pounder in the correct bridge position, and then a 2nd 1/4 Pounder, one inch (or less) away.
Both of them wired in series.

Can anyone try and predict how such a set up might sound ?
There will be NO toggle. BOTH units are activated at all time.
Just a Master vol & Tone knob.

All info will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a pretty cool project! [emoji106][emoji2532]

What you are talking about doing is essentially having a wide range hum bucker in the bridge position instead of the traditional single coil. I’m sure it would sound pretty cool, but personally I would set it up with a toggle or two so that I could split 21 pick up or the other, Or have the ability to put them into parallel instead of series... but that’s just me. Seems to me that the positioning of that second quarter pound would give a pretty cool sound, presumably a little warmer than typical bridge tone.

One thing I would suggest if you’re planning to do this would be to get the second quarter pound custom made RWRP so that it will be hum-canceling with the other one.

Keep us posted!

Quik sidenote: A 1/4 Pounder is a hamburger. A Quarter Pound, is a pickup. :)

I had a Quarter Pound once, in the bridge. It's a fairly dark pickup as singles go. Two in series, would be even darker. It could still be a cool project, but I'd at least experiment with an on-on-on switch so you could hear series/parallel and split. Even if it was just mounted on a lead wire that hung out from under the control plate temporarily.

Re: Potential Project : twin pick up Esquire !!

Two quarter pounds in series might be a bit too much IMHO. Wooly if you're lucky, all mud and no articulation if you're not. I would definitely consider more controls like ArtieToo suggests. Or two lower outputs pickups.

Re: Potential Project : twin pick up Esquire !!

Someone on this forum had a Custom Shop pickup that was essentially two QPs on the same baseplate. I didn't hear anything about it other than it existed.

Re: Potential Project : twin pick up Esquire !!

QP by itself is plenty fat. I agree with others who've said that two QPs in series is likely to be dark at best, and likely muddy too. IMO something wound using vintage size wire would be a better choice. Some coil offset ought to give you better clarity, kinda along the lines of a 59/Custom Hybrid.
