Both are great tubes, but both tubes create different sounds.

What is in your amp right now, and do you like how it currently sounds?

If you don't like the sound of the amp currently, what way would you like to change it.

I would argue that us Les Paul users and abusers don't need any more of that "chugga-chugga' bottom end...........mine would "chugga' you right out of the room....lol. My 1987x has the tubes that it came with however long ago that was and it seems to break up too early, so once i get my new cab, I will need to mess around and do tweaky thangs when I install the new board.........fortunately i have 3 good Mullard 12AX7's that came out of my stereo preamp (needs 4, one went microphonic)...so when i do the upgrades on the marshall, they are going in first to see what happens:bigthumb:

I have a pair of the new Mullards, not put them in any amp yet. Will do so this weekend and report back.

I've got svetlanas (not the winged c version though).......I am changing them not because i don't like them.....just because it's time for some new ones. I like the sound of my amp but i would be happy if i could slightly improve the "density" of the mids, have a little bit more bass( remember???we are talking a 1x12 combo here) and a more clear treble.

Any idea of the age of the Svet's that are currently in the amp?

Real Svet's or Winged C's were called Svetlana a few years back. This is where all the confusion comes from.


I am trying to determine what you have to give an opinion on which way to go.

I hear a lot of people claiming that the St Petersburg "winged C logo" Svetlanas are superior to the new ones, but have no firsthand opinion.
I wonder if it's just parroted info, or if there is an actual difference in quality and tone?? Anyone used both?

I had both in my XXX and noticed little if any difference. I have only had the regular Svet's in the DSL.

I did not like the JJ EL34's. I thought they were very "hard" sounding for lack of a better term, especially in the lower mids, didn't work for my sound at all.
