Power Supplies-Power Conditioners

I'd probably never need to do this, but, I've experienced different tones from my amp from day to day. I've seen other comment on how they've noticed tonal differences between different locations and the kind of load on the local power supply. Do professionals ever travel with their own power generators or use power signal conditioners to make sure it's the same every where?

Re: Power Supplies-Power Conditioners

I own two Furman M-8 Power Conditioners. I never, ever, gig without them. But then the power is dirty here.

Most people understand that they need to protect their computers and their entertainment systems... well your rig is just as susceptable as these other electronic devices and just as expensive. Protect it.

Re: Power Supplies-Power Conditioners

Those aren't nearly as expensive as I expected. Maybe I will consider a power conditioner. I expected that they would be hugely expensive as in hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Re: Power Supplies-Power Conditioners

Power conditioners/surge supressors do help to keep your supply voltage constant or at least spike free but they aren't a cure-all for varying tone.

The tone from my amps varies a lot depending on conditions. Different rooms sound can vary greatly sonically and I'd swear my rig sounds different depending on the temp and humidity of my house. Some days it sounds phenominal and the very next day it sounds horrid. So I spend 1/2 a day tweaking it back in and the following day my original settings are killer again.

I don't knows if it is me or the room but it's always different at my house, even with conditioners.

Re: Power Supplies-Power Conditioners

The ART PB 4x4 worked great in my rack and only costs about 50 bucks ;)

Re: Power Supplies-Power Conditioners

Heh, I run some massive power conditioner I got from my dad's work for free.

Our house was wired by morons, I wouldn't trust anything to these wall sockets lol.

It's probably part of the reason that I can run a ton of volume and gain with single coils and only have a whisper of hum.

Power conditioners (at least in the Furman range) generally just filter and regulate current. Voltage regulators are another item (again, in the Furman range - there's probably combined units I don't know of).

Re: Power Supplies-Power Conditioners

I use Furman and ART in the studio racks.

Since I don't use guitar racks, I don't need a rackmounted one, and somehow I aquired a 6 input floor version made by Planet Waves. It's great, but I have no idea where it came from. I think I jammed with someone who left it behind, and have no idea who. Get a floor version if you don't need a rack version.

Re: Power Supplies-Power Conditioners

$40? I've never seen any power conditioners that cheap in the UK. Does anybody know where I can get a basic (good but no fancy features) one cheaply in the UK?

Re: Power Supplies-Power Conditioners

You can get a rack mount unit called the Rack Rider which is cheaper than a Furman. It is a licensed Furman product so I think it is very close. I have one and it really zaps the noise.
