Power supply advice

Hi all,

Granted I'm one who likes to just push gear to it's theoretical limits for the sake of building something really cool that I can be proud of, but sorting out what I want in a power supply to upgrade from my MXR Noise Brick is proving to be challenging. Generally I'm looking for something dead quiet, preferably made in a country that has fair trading principles (e.g. USA, Canada, EU, Japan... not China or others with devalued currency and etc.). Not really keen on daisy chaining/splitting outputs, but willing to listen.

Pedal board: custom made, power supply will be mounted under the board, bottom of the deck is fully shielded and grounded. All of the electrical is under the board and segregated from the audio lines.

Pedals include (input to output): Mesa Stowaway buffer, TC Electronic Polytune 2, HBE Detox EQ, Dunlop Crybaby Classic, MXR 74' reissue Phase 90, Friedman Buxom Boost, Seymour Duncan 805, MXR Microamp +, ADA PBF Flanger, Seymour Duncan Vapor Trail Delay and a Suhr Jack Rabbit.

Amps: Soldano Atomic 16, Fender 68' Reissue Custom Deluxe reverb, 81' Marshall JCM 800 - all just at breakup by themselves

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks!

Re: Power supply advice

Thanks,

That's one I'm considering. My highest current draw is 150 Ma from the ADA and everything outside the tuner is analog, so good option but might be slight overkill.

Also considering the Friedman Power Grid 10 + a wart for the tuner... disadvantage is no 18 V

Also considering the Voodoo Labs Mondo... mixed reviews though

Other ideas/experiences?

thanks again!

Re: Power supply advice

How much are those options vs a Pedal Power 2+ and an ISO-5?

Generally trying to keep things at one power supply output to one device without any chaining. So the Pedal Power and the ISO-5 don't really match up with what I'm going for.

Thanks for the input though.

Re: Power supply advice

Mixed reviews on the Mondo... are you talking about the two users on Sweetwater? One of them docked it a star because it’s just a power supply, and the other was mad because the Pedal Train mounting brackets weren’t included.

Re: Power supply advice

I've seen some suggestions that the Mondo is noisy compared with say the Friedman or the Strymon Zuma (too few outputs) from various sources. I do realize that these forums are highly subjective and these could be cases where the user had a ground loop... iffy cable or many other potential factors that induced the noise. I'll assuming that you have a Mondo and don't experience noise issues. Sound about right?

Re: Power supply advice

The Voodoo Lab power supplies can be noisy when the transformer is in the correct (or incorrect) orientation with a wah inductor. There are some goofy videos of people putting their wah on top of the VL and it hums. Just keep the wah away from the power supply on the board.

Switching supplies like the Strymon and One-Spot (Friedman also? Not too familiar with those) don’t exhibit the same behavior. The nice thing about the switching supplies is that they are lighter than the previous toroidal transformer designs.

By the way, a Mondo is just a PP2+ and PP Digital internally connected instead of externally (using the courtesy outlet on the PO2+).

If money were no object I’d probably use a Strymon or GigRig System.

Re: Power supply advice

Good post, thanks.

Considering that my deck looks like: Pedals, 3/4" birch ply, grounded copper shielding, 1/4" birch veneer then the underside where the power supply where everything is mounted (at the time I was grant writing for research funding... so the pedal board was my diversion from that torture) so I think the interaction between the power supply and my wah (I'll keep on the opposite side of my 12X24 board) should be negligible... so I guess the Mondo is back in the running.

Thanks again

Re: Power supply advice

The Truetone One Spot Pro's are great supplies. Check out the Truetone Pro CS12 if you decide you can stomach the made in Asia thing as they are made in China.

Spending big money on a power supply for everything else then plugging the first pedal in your chain into a potentially noisy wall wart, doesn't seem like a great idea IMHO.

Being “true bypass” and only on when applying a mute I’d think that this pedal’s power would have no effect on the signal chain when not active (bypassed). Am I missing something here.

Re: Power supply advice

Are you gonna swing for the bleachers on this or not? :lmao:

Re: Power supply advice

Godlyke Power All is a great daisy-chainer if you would go the cheap route.

Don't you want something for your noise-gate/suppressor to do? lol

Re: Power supply advice

I can't speak from experience but supposedly the Friedman power supply address all of the issues people had with the Voodoo.

Re: Power supply advice

If I don’t like my Mondo, I’ll get a couple of Friedmans. Friedpersons.
