Power Tube Confusion

Hi

I currently own a laney LC50 - the original design - not the MarkII or recent "upgrade" version. I love this amp; its a monster.

When I purchsed the amp new, it was fitted with bland sounding SOVTEK 5881s. A few years ago I made the switch to using S.E.D 6L6GCs. I fancy a change now; I want to experiment with other tubes including Tung Sol 5881s.

My question/problem is the Tung Sol 5881s (and others) are rated at 25w (400v plate max), whereas I've read that the Sovtek 5881 is "not a real 5881" and is said to be more based upon 6L6GC specs i.e. 30W rating (500v). Therefore I am not aure whether my amp can take tubes rated at 25w.:dunno:

I've obtained the original factory service manual for my amp and it simply states "5881", and lists "5881 (6L6)" in the parts list. I have measured the plate voltage which is just over 400v.

I had always assumed that I could run any 6L6 or 5881 type in my amp - given the above is my assumption correct??

Re: Power Tube Confusion

It's a matter of being able to adjust the bias. As long as you can adjust the bias correctly, then a heat dissapation of 25 watts @ ~400 volts could be handled.
