Power Tube Question - Egnater Tweaker

Okay, so last night I fired the Tweaker up for the first time in a while (doing a sound test for how much soundproofing I'll need in the house from the basement). Let the amp warm up for a while, started a loop in my TC Electronic Alter Ego, ran the Master Volume up to a whopping 2.5 (75db at 3ft.), and then wandered around the house, seeing how well I heard the amp around the outside of the house, and around inside (aside: good news - could barely be heard outside, and I honestly think I would have to seriously crank it before the neighboars would complain. Bad news - inside was a whole 'nother story, but that's not why I'm posting, soooo...)

After shutting off the loop, I leaned over the head to start turning it down and shutting it off, and noticed the top of the power tube on the right was glowing red, while the power tube on the left was not.

In the historic words of so many people, I thought "Well, that's odd..."

So, what's up? Need new power tubes? Need biasing?

Also just want to say, these amps are bad ass. Haven't replaced the stock tubes myself, so let us know what tubes you end up going with.

Tweaker 15?

They run a ton of voltage and can cook tubes pretty easily, it ate my stock ones early on. I got a pair of NOS black plate RCA's that were very closely matched in it now and it's been fine.

Bought my Tweaker 15 used about 2 years ago, still running stock tubes but thinking about getting new ones.

Mine came with EHX 6V6, now it has EHX 6CA7. They run way hotter, and they sound brighter, bassier and more firm.
Almost as if the stock Tweaker had a Vintage/Modern/Very Modern switch.

I love it!

Re: Power Tube Question - Egnater Tweaker

I just got my brand new one last week,it came with JJ-6v6 power tubes..I have read that they are cathode based so no biasing needed.as an experiment I put in 2 new JJ-6l6-GC's in mine and a tung-sol re-issue 12AX7 in preamp tube 1,made a huge difference..I would say change the tube out,you should have no problems..I have also read and heard that "matched" power tube sets are not as important in these non bias cathode tube heads.

Re: Power Tube Question - Egnater Tweaker

I forgot that I have a Tungsol in V1 as well. Similar to the stock Ruby HG tube that came stock, only a bit brighter.
Dropping bigger bottles (6L6, EL34, 6CA7 and even 5881) in one of these makes a world of difference.

6CA7 is a highly underrated tube IMHO.
