let he re phrase that is the hot rail part of a prail the same as a hot rail? here is my situation

I have most bad ass super strat but i want to give it a Dave Murray type of sound so they say he uses hot rails .. but there may be time i want the versatility of a humbucker my question is if i get a prail and turn off just the humbucker part how much will it sound like an actual hotrail? close or exact .. i would go with a set of prails but i dont want to risk losing the Dave Murray sound i'm looking for

Please answer if you have something actually add "I don't know" or "Maybe" doesn't help me
sorry if i come off as a jerk on the last part but i need sound information

Thanks everyone

Re: prail same as hot rail?

A P-Rail is supposed to be a P-90 and Strat pickup combined. The Strat half is similar to a Hot Rail, but I don’t know if it’s wound the same, and, it’s only one coil.

In my experience from installing a couple of P-Rails for customers, they never sound good with both coils in series. It’s a very dark, bassy tone.

You’re better off putting a bright humbucker in, or a real Hot Rail.

He uses a DiMarzio Super Distortion in his signature guitar. That would get the tone you are after.

Re: prail same as hot rail?

i kinda assume the prail is a vintage p90 coil and a hot rail coil, dont know that for sure though

Re: prail same as hot rail?

That rail on the P-Rail doesn't sound like a Hot Rail to me. It is kind of its own thing- I don't know of another pickup it sounds like. It is dark like a Hot Rail, but doesn't seem to have nearly the output.

The bridge in series works pretty well in my SG; I find the tone somewhat similar to a Gibson Iommi signature humbucker. I agree that it's too hot and dark in the neck position.

Dave Murrary used DiMarzio Super Distortions BITD, but he's had Hot Rails in his #1 Strat since the early 90s.

IMO the "Strat" coil in a P-Rails sounds like a single coil Vintage Rails.

Re: prail same as hot rail?

im pretty sure its a vintage p90 and hot rail coil having thought about it... maybe frank and i talked about it or something. a hotrail coil with an alnico 5 bar magnet isnt going to sound the same as the little ceramic mag in the hotrail pup

Re: prail same as hot rail?

I use the P Rails as a neck+neck set. I usually run them as P90s only, and I have push-push pots to activate the entire pickup in series. I don't fid them excessively dark when run in series, i.e. they aren't so dark that they can't be e.q.d nicely. That said, I don't use them as full humbuckers unless I am playing through my 25W amp, at least. They give too much output for my 12 and 15 watt amps.

Maybe, I am not certain. I know that it doesn't sound like a neck or bridge Hot Rails to me.

Re: prail same as hot rail?

The whole different bobbin size in every dimension + different mag type and positioning will make for a wholly unrelated pickup, even if you match wire gauge and approx end K reading (turn count will be way different as the bobbin is bigger)
