The Prails were launched in 2008, almost ten years ago. It took me all that time to find a way to make them look presentable (because boy oh boy do I find these pickups ugly!). Tonewise, they're a hit and miss. It takes a really, really good guitar for them to sound good. Good, but never epic. Still, good enough I'd say.
I added a chrome open cover as well as precision-milled brass top plate and now it looks practically decent. it will look a lot better with a gold open cover, or with a silver nickel top plate, but both are not feasible right now financially, so this will have to make due.
In terms of tone, the p90 side is a great p90 tone, hands down. The rail side is a great single coil-ish tone, with a stratty feel to it. The 'humbucker tone' is a whole other matter.
I do not like the series setting. Not one little bit. It's too warm, too saturated, too fat. Almost like a superdistortion (JB > Superdistortion, by far: hybridized is its best form, but that's a PITA to make
, but that's a whole other story). The parallel setting is much better! Gnarly, cleaner, more twang, more sizzle and a lot less compressed. I will be changing the wiring so the parallel wiring is the standard setting.
Just wanted to share.
Oh, and this is the guitar I made for the pickups:
Single piece rosewood neck, ebony fretboard (24.75'' scale, 22 frets, compound radius), black korina body with comfort bevels, analine dye and nitrocellulose finish. y'know, my take on the 'devil horn' guitar.
