My friend says he saw one, but (for obvious reasons) I was skeptical. I looked online, but couldn't find any. Is he lying?

Didn't come that way off the production line. Fender didn't even make Humbuckers in the pre-CBS era and for half of it, Humbuckers didn't exist period. The one your friend saw was modded, no doubt.

no such thing as a stock pre cbs hss strat. i dont even know if there are any stock cbs era hss strats either, although they did have humbuckers in the starcaster

Re: Pre-CBS era HSS strat?

The only way he saw a pre-CBS HSS Strat is if some A$$hole gouged a big hole in the bridge position & either cut or replaced the guard. If it does exist is a gosh darn shame!!!

your friend is full of poop. however if you are curious and looking for something like that-may I suggest buying a used Eric Johnson and modding it with a different pickguard and having someone rout out a humbucker or using a Seymour Duncan mini humbucker in the bridge like a mini Jb or a lil 59. The Eric Johnson has a thin nitro finish like the pre CBS strats but you will have to see if the neck profile works for you. It is a soft V profile. It takes a few days to get used to it but if you have large hands it works great as you can bend using the wood of the neck instead of trying to pivot between your thumb and finger on the fretboard. another cool feature is the quartersawn neck which adds a little midrange snap to the notes, more sustain, and hopefully less neck trussrod adjustments. I wouldnt use a brand new guitar to mod, but if you really like strats and you like the neck and features save the original pickguard and mod a cheaper used one........Just an idea.

I still say, in the 70's they were just old guitars. Before the heavy weights started using 57-60 Les Pauls, no one wanted them and they were pretty affordable. No one has done that to a pre-CBS from 1990 to the current day.

We knew what they were in the 70's. We knew new Fenders were not as nice as early 60's and 50's Strats.

But some of us were too young to respect them and altered them because there was no other way to get what we thought we wanted.

There was no Warmoth or parts-o casters yet.

Heck, there were no replacement pickups except for Gibson and Fender!

If you wanted a humbucker you bought one from Gibson and it was a T-Top.

Re: Pre-CBS era HSS strat?

I loved that guitar as a kid (still love that neck pickup tone), but the pickup rings on the pickguard are giving me fits.
