Preamp tube positions

In an amp with multiple preamp tubes, does one tube have more effect on tone than another? If an amp has 5 12ax7's, for example, which one will affect the overall tone of the amp more?

It seems that the first one would, because it is the first in the chain, however I'm not sure if this is true. Does anyone know? Thanks

Re: Preamp tube positions

Totally depends on the design of the amp.

In a Fender amp like a Deluxe Reverb, the tube farthest to the right is the normal channel pre-amp tube and the entire preamp and volume and tone controls for that channel are that tube. Not a very important tube since most people don't use the normal channel.

The second tube from the right is the vibrato channel tube...that's where I'd put my best 12ax7.

The next two are reverb tubes

The next one is the vibrato tube

The next one is the phase invertor tube.
