I have a dimension Deluxe
mim
i love it but the MIA has a smoother and more refined
preamp especially for the treble

i was wondering of seymour duncan had an active preamp that would be work in the dimension

Re: preamp upgrade for mim dimension

So, one dual J coil pickup, four controls, mid-price 18v active EQ.

Are the controls;
1) Volume, Balance, Treble, Bass
2) Volume, Treble, Mid, Bass?

I would begin by checking the dimensions (no pun intended) of the control cavity. This may dictate what replacement circuitry will physically fit into the available space.

As stated above, the stock EQ system on your bass is +18v. This should provide more than enough headroom for normal bass work. The likely problem with the Treble cut/boost control is that its central frequency is set higher than you would like. (Check to see whether this is adjustable via micro DIP switches.)

The other possible explanation is that the EQ system is merely boosting such signal as the pickup can provide.

If your budget can stretch to it, I would be inclined to put your money towards the NYC Soapbar model pickup.

the controls are
volume followed by bass, mid, treble

yes all the other frequencies are fine
as far as the preamp outperforming the pickup
unless the mim pickup is different from the MIA pickup
it must be the preamp
since the MIA bass handles the higher frequencies a little better

unless it is the Ash Vs alder body

i will see if there is some adjustability
nyc soapbar?
I will check it out
but I wasnt looking to change the sound of the bass
just improve the preamp.

I will check it out none the less

Thanks for such a thorough answer

Re: preamp upgrade for mim dimension

I like the Duncan Basslines active preamps myself. They offer one for passive pickups and one for active pickups. I don't remember if they make an 18v one or not. I am not sure if their circuit board will fit in your bass either but they make a good preamp IMO.

That being said, in most cases you will find the MIM pickups are inferior to the MIA pickups.
