im looking for a pristine sounding preamp tube for the V1 section of my buddy's fender twin(bastard!). Low, low gain and microphonics, just sweet cleans.

Re: preferred preamp tubes for CLEANS!?

Sovtek LPS or JJ ECC83S/82 if you can't afford NOS.

Re: preferred preamp tubes for CLEANS!?

I've got the JJ ECC83S in my peacemaker and it sounds much smoother and warmer then the horrible grainy sovtek or harmonix ones that were in there.

Re: preferred preamp tubes for CLEANS!?

by the way, check out www.eurotubes.com and send Bob your question. He's been doing this sorta thing for a while. I believe theres a nother guy that does quite a bit tube work on the HC forum.

Any 12AX7/ECC83 have the same amount of gain, no matter which brand.

What you're looking for is a 5751. KCA NOS Tubes has some really nice ones... http://www.kcanostubes.com/12ax7.html#a5751

Or you could go even lower, all the way to a 12AU7, which has 20% of the 12AX7's gain. This tube is actually used in tube hi-fi stereos and runs very clean. I have one in my v1 section and it cleaned and quited things up very well. Check out this site for more on pre amp tube gain factor: http://www.thetubestore.com/gainfactor.html

The rest of the site is also very good, as are the prices.

JJ's are cheap and sound great in clean amps. Same with the Sovtek LPS, and EI's. Don't worry about EI's reputation for microphonics....most distributors only buy good tested ones, and they sound great.
