Here's a recap and update of my progress so far:

GFS Paulownia body, sanded back and refinished

6 coats of clear, unsanded

After wet sanding and applying 2 more coats of clear, it is wet sanded to 1500 and hand buffed with Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and Ultimate Polish. I'm just giving it a few more days to cure before assembling

Nice work, I used that color on a pedal build a while ago. Pictures definitely don't do it justice.

Well done!

I hope you gave that Duplicolor clear coat plenty of time to cure before you sanded it. Otherwise it will just look cloudy again later. I made that mistake with a Warmoth.

Yes going full bridge.

I don't have pics of the neck yet but it is a very light maple CV Squier. I am prepared to grab up a warmoth if it doesn't work out for me. For under $100 with tuners it was a no brainer to give a try

Duplicolor is only the color coat. Clear is minwax which is said to have a relatively short cure time. That said it hung for around 3 weeks and there was absolutely no remaining smell from the solvents

in that case, have you considered a white pearl pickguard? i think they look great with maple necks. i put one on my last build.

If you got any paint left, you should totally match the headstock! That would be algebraic!
Also agree about using a pearl pickguard!

That looks real nice. Reminds me of a '63 Nova I used to own. Light blue on light blue. Ah, the days of colored interiors...

If you got any paint left, you should totally match the headstock! That would be algebraic!
Also agree about using a pearl pickguard!

I like the look of a matching headstock but I tend to swap things around. Painting the headstock would limit swaps and kill resale.

The pearl pg looks great above but I don't know how it would work with the metallic paint. Might be too much going on. In any case I have an aged white going in with an SM-1 minihum

Ah, that's good. Minwax is polyurethane, which is completely different from whatever the Duplicolor clear is (some kind of lacquer, no idea). Cure time is way faster - three weeks is plenty. I've finished stuff in Minwax and Varathane (also poly) and I didn't need more than 24 hours for a full cure.

I think Duplicolor is designed to blend nicely when doing spot repair on a car, which is probably why their clear is so soft compared to poly.

Good to know that Minwax clear works over Duplicolor base.

I did not use minwax poly. Different product. This is minwax clear lacquer, nitro I believe.. Duplicolor is acrylic lacquer

Minwax may make polyurethane, but they also make a nitro lacquer clear.

Fair enough! Keep it in mind for when you find the ultimate neck that you'd never swap out tho.

Oh ok. I've never seen their lacquer product in Canada - probably because it would be impossible to get it across the border.

Now that you mention it, my first attempt to finish my Warmoth body was a Minwax poly clear over a Duplicolor base. The problem was that the poly didn't adhere to the base coat and just peeled off. The Duplicolor wasn't damaged, but I did have to sand it down to get all the peeling poly off.
