Pricecheck aisle 3--$300 for a Gibson Flying V faded w/ a repair?

Haven't seen pics but he says it is very hard to show in pics and doesn't look to be a full break but more of a hairline crack.

Current owner bought it this way. Doesn't know how it happened, how severe it was or who repaired it.

But it's a 2003 and seems to have held up pretty well.

I don't know. Any repairs scare me a bit even tho glue should make it stronger (assuming it was done right)

agreed. he's about 45 minutes away or else I'd just check it out in person

Re: Pricecheck aisle 3--$300 for a Gibson Flying V faded w/ a repair?

I guess the real question is what should I look for? Tuning stability, neck angle? Something else?

45 minutes isn't that far. You can also request to meet somewhere in the middle..

it's only far cause I work 8-5 and have 2 kids under 3 years old at home :)

If the repair holds up under your specific playing conditions, notably the strings you use (9-42 or 15-90?) and the tuning you go for (F# or C?).

If it were a hairline crack, then I doubt the "repair" statement, unless the guy is totally anal about it. The only time I ever saw a hairline crack get worse was when it was later dropped, stomped, thrown, or fell off a truck. Or some 'tard put 15-90s on it and tuned it to E.

That said, the two (three?) Faded Vs I've had over the years were all from Ebay, in great shape, for $500-$600, so it might be worth it to look/wait for one of those. On the other hand, regluing a headstock is easy enough, as long as it's a clean-ish break (most are) and some doof hasn't gone at it with a saw blade.

Re: Pricecheck aisle 3--$300 for a Gibson Flying V faded w/ a repair?

Pass.

If you do go see it, my criteria for buying a Gibson with a headstock break is simple. DO NOT BUY if there are chunks of wood missing, even a mere sliver. DO NOT BUY if the crack or break goes through the headstock faceplate. On a break like that, it is much more time-consuming and expensive to do a cosmetically acceptable repair. And ideally, with any crack repair, you're really owe it to yourself to have the repair as invisible as possible.

For any serious repair, you need to do your homework. Yes it's a Gibson, and it's only $300, but if you have to put another $200--300 in it, it might be simpler to buy a straight guitar in the first place. The Faded V is a budget model, obviously if you're dealing with a '59 Les Paul Historic, the numbers are a little different. The Faded V is probably not the guitar of your dreams, so keep an eye on the numbers. Eventually you may want to flip it to buy a better guitar. Invest wisely: buy low and then sell high. Bargain hard.

Good luck.

Another point: if it's limited to the headstock only, and does not affect the actual neck or fretboard, and you're not concerned with the Charles Schwab Guitars-as-investments angle, it really only becomes a problem if, as Bill says, you have to pay out to have it fixed, where your total expense is equal to having bought one that wasn't broken to begin with.

I bought a Jackson KVMG a couple of years ago for cheap because the headstock had snapped in half. Normally an $850+ guitar, I got it for ~$350. I clamped the headstock piece in place and drilled 2 holes, one above the other, through both halves, inserted dowels, and glued the crap out of them. Is it visible? You bet. Does it hold tuning? You bet. Does it hurt the resale? You bet. Is that one of the most awesome imports Jackson has ever produced? You bet.

The Pros outweigh the Cons in my experience. Then again, you may have different priorities when it comes to gear.

Thanks all

Will keep you posted

You could almost part it out on ebay for $200.

If it feels nice, sounds nice, and looks nice, go for it. Cracks are no big deal, and if they are, they can be repaired easily.

Re: Pricecheck aisle 3--$300 for a Gibson Flying V faded w/ a repair?

Even with a repair, its only $300 so a small amount for a guitar that could be a real killer.........hell I've spent more than that on a single pickup.

The faded V's offer great value for money.......same construction but just less finish. The only downside is that as a faded there is almost no opportunity to hide the repair as a refin during the process would draw attention much more than leaving the area alone.

Re: Pricecheck aisle 3--$300 for a Gibson Flying V faded w/ a repair?

It might be worth a look, the early faded Vs and SGs had ebony fretboards, I'm not sure what year they switched to rosewood, but IIRC the ones with the crescent moon inlays were ebony. That doesn't really affect the value, but it makes it a cool and fairly uncommon model.

I have a 1977 Hamer, Adam has it below, with a total headstock repair that is well repaired since 1980. If it is seamless, and holds a tune, Rawk that for that money. Got a case? That alone is worth $75 in great shape more maybe but not much.

Look for his house when he sends you the address.

Seriously though, if it tunes up and stays there after playing it a bit, and it feels good and sounds good.....I'd buy that thing. But that's me and Gibby V's.
