I suspect it is original..at least the box. None of the reissues were small-boxes to my knowledge.
It sure looks it but even amps from the 80's can have the same wear if older ones got put up for a while. This one doesn't look like a short box. It's a short chasis obviously. The 1987x and 1959x are both short chasis and look just like that, always have from what I recall.

Yeah I just looked again at the bigger pic...didn't see it below before. Looks like a large box to me. If it was an 80s model, he had it retolexed to look "vintage". All the 800s had the cloth front no? LPB is the marshall guru, maye he can chime in some more.

Actually I have my Doyle book around here somehwere...hmmm

Suffice to say this auction is whacked.

Wow, I hadn't noticed there was a reserve. As if the £4000 starting price isn't enough.

OK, now I'm definitely not buying! :D

The 800's had the cloth front but the reissues had/still have the vintage look to them.

I'd still love to get a hold of one of those 50 watters but not at that price. That's nuts. They're much more valueable to me stock anyway.

Davey, what do ya need 24 frets for? 22 is plenty. ;)

And how the hell did this turn in to a guitar thread? :laugh2:

That amp just looks like a 50W fullsize JMP from 71-73, and someone changed the piping around the front panel to the type that's on late 70's MV's and JCM800's. They may have done that on this amp so it'd be a better match, sitting atop JCM800 cabs.

During the JCM 800 era, Marshall did make a few reissue non mastervolume 4 input heads with grillcloth instead of levant front. My friend Todd, from www.revolutionguitar.com has a cool Marshall collection, and I think he's got 1 or 2 of those rare heads. His 4 input 100W JCM800 may be one of the loudest Marshalls I've ever heard.

Re: Priceless! Marshall JMP 50 Vintage Rare X- Iron Maiden

I did some poking around and found some schematics from 1981 of JCM800 series 1959 and 1987 models, each with 4 inputs. No pics of what the boxes looked like though that I can find.

I'd still love to get a hold of one of those. Man, those are great sounding amps right there. You absolutely have to run an attenuator though without fear of waking the neighbors in the next town over though.

I paid £425 for my '77 JMP 2204, INCLUDING a 4x12. This year! :fest7:

Someday you'll feel bad about mugging that old woman, and only leaving her cab fare. Thieves like you should be put somewhere with other thieves.

The JCM800 1987 had the full length control panal, and the regular JCM800 cloth front box, I'm fairly certian. I have seen an example of the JCM800 1959 and it's a JCM800 box.

Additionally, if you can find some mid 80's Eric Clapton concert footage it usually shows Eric playing through two JCM800 1987 1/2 stacks. These look like JCM800 heads, but have four inputs. I used to have some bootleg audio tapes from this period, and Eric was getting some great tone running Blackie through these. As I recall, I particulary liked his chording tones on Let It Rain, and also his leads tones on Badge, and Foreverman.

The 1987S that came out in 88 had the old style large box, but the panal openings had a rather round large radius shapes. The one in question here doesn't have the large radius opening, so my guess is the box, at least, is early 70's.
