So, I had bought one of these a few years ago for a guitar build I am still working on which is a completely custom design.
I only bought the Trembucker bridge model, which is for a Strat with wide spacing ( you don't see many this way and its requested at the custom shop, I am not sure if it still this way , but it only comes with a Nylon bobbin, not the reinforced type the standard size has, it is the only difference though ) so it would work with a wide Floyed Rose Rail Tail. The first thing I did was disassemble it and split the coils which was a delicate operation, I would recommend having them do it at the factory if that is what you want to do, because I had to change the leads completely to add a 4 wire+ground shield wire, I am guessing this is something that needs to be requested, I did not know. Luckily for me, heh, the tests with the meter shows that I correctly separated the coils
I remember when I bought it you could find them quite a bit cheaper than they are now. I am still working on the builds 3D model in cad software trying to dial in all the details. One of the reasons I hopped on here was to ask a question about pickup wiring actually, as I have just finished working on a wiring diagram, but it had some quirks in it, (I wanted to know how much of a problem they would be.)
So having more time now to focus on this project, I plan on completing this guitar this year if all goes well. If so I will need to come back and leave a follow up post, actually having more helpful information, about what it actually sounds like, heh.
My guitar has a very modern setup, and the pickups/positions are not supposed to provide similar sounds. For example I have a RWRP Stra-Bro 90 for high output and darker tones in the Neck, and a Q-tuner in the middle position to pickup harmonics with its low distortion at higher frequency ranges, than if I need to get them to play better in a way the tone controls will not compensate for, I planned on adding a capacitor to the Q-tuner in series to blend it in with the SD's better. This is wired with a supers switch / a Fender S1(4PDT) for a ton of unique tones, plus a coil split for the humbucker.
In the meantime I was getting ready to wire a Strat this way, to see how it works out before I get dedicated with expensive pickups. I wont have the same tone or quality as these will be 80's pickups, but I will at least understand all the types of sounds that will be available to get the general idea, and function.
So, wish me luck, hopefully latter this year I will have more info about the Zephyr, I am really looking forward to it.
Tale care,
;-D
P.S. Short story?... No, I have no idea who is using them,... lol.
