Pricey pickup?

Apparently, Wes Hauch had a set of 7-stringers made, but that's not what he actually "uses" in any of his guitars

I think there was one famous Strat player who got a set of the single coils (John Mayer, maybe?)

I'd be curious if anyone here fell for the hy...I mean...bought them and put them to regular use

Kind of O/T, but I heard the Keith Merrow Fluences are based on his set of Zephyr Nazgûl/Sentient.

Which I don't know how accurate it is, since his Fluences are Alnico.

Well, I know the KM neck model is just the regular Fluence "Classic" neck, so not sure how much truth there is to that. I suppose it's possible that the bridge might be based on something more unique.

So, I had bought one of these a few years ago for a guitar build I am still working on which is a completely custom design.

I only bought the Trembucker bridge model, which is for a Strat with wide spacing ( you don't see many this way and its requested at the custom shop, I am not sure if it still this way , but it only comes with a Nylon bobbin, not the reinforced type the standard size has, it is the only difference though ) so it would work with a wide Floyed Rose Rail Tail. The first thing I did was disassemble it and split the coils which was a delicate operation, I would recommend having them do it at the factory if that is what you want to do, because I had to change the leads completely to add a 4 wire+ground shield wire, I am guessing this is something that needs to be requested, I did not know. Luckily for me, heh, the tests with the meter shows that I correctly separated the coils :)

I remember when I bought it you could find them quite a bit cheaper than they are now. I am still working on the builds 3D model in cad software trying to dial in all the details. One of the reasons I hopped on here was to ask a question about pickup wiring actually, as I have just finished working on a wiring diagram, but it had some quirks in it, (I wanted to know how much of a problem they would be.)

So having more time now to focus on this project, I plan on completing this guitar this year if all goes well. If so I will need to come back and leave a follow up post, actually having more helpful information, about what it actually sounds like, heh.

My guitar has a very modern setup, and the pickups/positions are not supposed to provide similar sounds. For example I have a RWRP Stra-Bro 90 for high output and darker tones in the Neck, and a Q-tuner in the middle position to pickup harmonics with its low distortion at higher frequency ranges, than if I need to get them to play better in a way the tone controls will not compensate for, I planned on adding a capacitor to the Q-tuner in series to blend it in with the SD's better. This is wired with a supers switch / a Fender S1(4PDT) for a ton of unique tones, plus a coil split for the humbucker.

In the meantime I was getting ready to wire a Strat this way, to see how it works out before I get dedicated with expensive pickups. I wont have the same tone or quality as these will be 80's pickups, but I will at least understand all the types of sounds that will be available to get the general idea, and function.

So, wish me luck, hopefully latter this year I will have more info about the Zephyr, I am really looking forward to it.

Tale care,

;-D

P.S. Short story?... No, I have no idea who is using them,... lol.

While my memory isn't what it used to be, I do remember a couple or so of people on this forum trying them back when they first came out. I remember words like "airy", "open", rich harmonics", etc., etc.

Then again, I may have dreamed it. Hopefully, those folks will stop in.

I tried it too, but I wasn't able to compare it to another pickup that used to be in the guitar, since the guitar I tried already had them. I remember several other people who have tried them too, but I don't think they were purchasers, just people who tried a guitar with them.

You're sparking my memory a bit. It may have been folks who tried them at the NAMM show.

i was visiting duncan when these were new. they had two lp type guitars built as identical as they could be, and two strats, again as identical as they could be. like same board for the bodies, same board for the necks, fingerboards, identical hardware, etc... one lp had passive pups, one had zephyrs. same with the strats. cant remember what passive pups they were, i wanna say it was 59s in the lp but i cant remember. that was many many sleeps and a few drinks ago. anyway, the zephyrs really did have something going on. i LOVED the neck humbucker, evan wouldnt give me one though. there was a string to string definition and clarity ive not heard in another pup. i honestly didnt love the strat single coil bridge pup since it was maybe too clear but the rest were really cool. im sure a few hundred more turns on that strat bridge pup might have made it more to my liking though.
