Pro Co Rat 2 or Marshall Guvnor 2

Just a thought on these two. Any one tried them and does anyone have a preference? I don't usually do metal but I love some good overdrive and distortion and was thinking about adding a decent pedal. I've heard sound samples of the Rat 2 but none from the Guvnor.

Whats the rest of your rig like? in particular what amp are you thinking of putting these in front of.

I have an original Guv'nor and a Whiteface Rat. The Guv'nor is somewhat smoother and has less gain. The Rat is rattier and can get into fuzzy territory when dialed in high.
Most of the Guv'nor's magic to me is about boosting an overdriven Marshall (type amp). Transparent and the 3 band EQ is nice.
The Rat sounds great through clean or dirty amps and although it has less knobs, I find it a bit more versatile.

I have a keeley modded ratII, it is killer for my sludge music! really it is a standard distortion pedal that most used for heavy rock.

I've owned both of those pedals and, while I like both, the Rat 2 is the one that I would consider more unique and more interesting. The Guv'2 is good at giving you a pretty wide range of Marshall-flavor distortions, but there are a lot of pedals that will do that. The Rat 2 gives you that extra something -- character, I'd say.

If you have an amp that doesn't give you any distortions that you like, and if you happen to like Marshall-type tones, get the Guv'nor 2. That's a serviceable range of dirt that you can dial in, and it may well help you decide what you want for your next amp. If you want a great pedal with a voice of its own that you'll be able to pair up with different types of amps over many years -- probably getting something different out of it each time -- then get the Rat 2.

Very well said Little Pigbacon. That is the best post I've heard on the subject. Thanks.

I've never tried a Guv'nor, but,I like the RAT 2. I did buy a You Dirty RAT over it, though.

If you are playing through a Frontman 25, don't spend money on a Stomp Pedal. Save up and get a Modeling amp like a Fender Mustang with all that built in. Spending 70 dollars on one pedal will not benefit you like having a super versatile amp to start with. If you had a good tube amp, I would say get the pedal and add some more later.

That's exactly what I was thinking. For $100, you can find a bunch of Vox Valvetronix and Fender Mustang combos on Craigslist. Put it next to your Fender Frontman 25, and run them in stereo with any type of stereo pedal like a delay or chorus. Or, just sell the Frontman to buffer the cost of buying a 'do it all' modeling amp.

I have plenty of experience with Rat Pedals and the Gov'nor II, but they're best running into loud tube amps at stage volume. At low practice volumes with a SS combo, you're better off just buying a modeling practice amp.

Yeah, I was looking at a Fender Champion 40 SS, decent modeling amp for $179 at most places plus it has a 12 inch speaker. More straightforward than a Mustang.
