Prob with new pup I installed

Well, I was up all last night installing a Jazz and a JB in my Les Paul. I ended up installing a 3-way switch for each pup for series/split/parallel. Anyway, the JB sounds really great, its hot. BUT the Jazz is not hot at all, at least half as much output as the JB. It's also very muddy, and doesn't distort well, for example the JB will be on with a moderate amount of distortion, then I switch to the Jazz and it sounds like a clean channel! Anyway, before I get into any wiring details, does this seem normal or is it most likely a wiring problem?

Re: Prob with new pup I installed

i am assuming you checked the pup height on the jazz to make sure it is high enough

it does sound like a wiring problem ... is it humming? ... one thing to do is to wire it straight to the output jack to test it ... black to hot, green and bare to ground .. white and red together and taped off ... this will let you know that the pup alone is ok ... then you can worry about the switch ... you might accidently have it in parallel mode instead of series .. that would explain the lack of output (but not the 'mud')

let us know

good luck

Re: Prob with new pup I installed

Thanks for the input! Ok, things are getting creepy. I unsoldered the ground coming from the guitar bridge and was messing around. All of a sudden I noticed that by touching that wire anywhere on the Jazz volume pot, the pup would come to life! Then all of a sudden, after checking some of the solder joints, the Jazz starts working beautifully, and the JB is really thin and weak! It's like the problem reversed itself. I don't know what to think because both pups are wired exactly the same... well I did move the bare wire from the main 3-way switch, (ground I assume), from the JB volume pot to the Jazz volume pot.... Any ideas?

Ya know what, it has to be a wiring problem, I'm now getting crackling and the level is changing when the guitar is moved, (it didn't do that before). I guess I'll have to take the whole mess out and check everything again.

Alright!!! It works great now. It was just a bad solder joint on the switch. All I can say is now I am a believer in the Jazz/JB combo. The output is actually really even between the two. Man I'm glad I decided to do this.

This photo was taken at 8:30AM, yes I really was up all night. You can kind of see I had to do a little routing in there.
