Hello everyone at Seymour Duncan!
Today I received an Ashdown Peacemaker 60 212 for Christmas. You can imagine my excitement as I put in the tubes and warmed her up. Two Sovteks on either end and two EH's in the middle. Then I put the EH el34s in there. I didn't bias them, as there were no provisions in the manual for it and the amp is autobiasing.
I warmed her up for 15 minutes while I tuned and practiced a bit. After I plugged in and turned her off standby, there was a loud hum coming from the amp. Same kind of hum you'd expect, just considerably louder, and could be controlled by the volume controls. If all the volumes were set to 0, then the hum disappeared. Now here's the kicker. When I turn her up to only even a moderate bedroom level, the hum gets louder of course and then a piercing noise is added to it. Louder the volume, louder the piercing noise. When I get the piercing noise the VU meter (measures output) on the front of the amp starts moving from its neutral position closer to red. The tubes in the amp are 2 years old, so I'm thinking it might be the power tubes. However, this is my first tube amp and I've never heard of anyone getting such a piercing noise from their amp.
My hands are really tied here, so any help would be appreciated. Solve this mystery and you can singlehandedly make my Christmas! Thanks for any replies.
