Problem with my Custom

I finaly got the Duncan Custom and put it in my guitar, but I have a problem. The Low E and A strings are very boomy and loose. Not tight at all, as I expected. And the sound is mushy in the 3 upper strings (low E, A, D). I solder it myself so it's likely that I've done something wrong. I think that it can't be the sound of the pickup like this. My brother has the JB in another guitar (very similar) and it has very tight sound with more treble and more sustain (with a lower pickup height). I also thought that my guitar had the EMGs 81 in it and the pots came with them, won't work with the Custom. The pots don't have a value on them so I don't know. If anyone has an idea of what's wrong I would be happy. My guitar is an ESP LTD MH-400 with mahogany/maple top body and maple/rosewood neck.
Thanks.

Re: Problem with my Custom

You'll need to replace the pots, EMG's use 25k value, while the Custom will need a 500k value.

Re: Problem with my Custom

What Deadskin said, I've had the same problem when I mixed passives with actives. Replace the pots and experience the huge difference

Re: Problem with my Custom

dont forget to buy new capictors to go with the new pots. I just installed a Custom with new 500k cts pots and .022 OD caps and it truely does sound awesome.
