Problem with my R7

Re: Problem with my R7

Thanks Simon, that is possible and I'm trying to eliminate that as a problem. I may end up having to shield the whole cavity by the time I'm done. I just plugged in my old tele and it's quiet as a mouse, but then it's gotten the full shielding job ala Guitarnuts.com. My house is screwy on the wiring, but the Paul is worse than any of my other guitars.

Re: Problem with my R7

Thanks buddy, I'm going to step back and start from scratch with everything again once my head clears from the frustration. I'll let you know if there's anything else, I really do appreciate it!

Re: Problem with my R7

Give me a holler! I'll be happy to tear apart my 98, I was thinking about putting the stock 57 back in the bridge. :p

Re: Problem with my R7

Problem solved....!!!

99% was the room that I was playing in and the power source. I moved to another room in my house and the problem all but disappeared. I still have investigate why my livingroom is a problem, but now I know that it isn't the guitar. I'm sure that touching up all of the solder joints helped a small bit, but it quite obvious that it's the power source. What I can't understand is that there are no florescent lights, nor was the tv on when I played. What other things could cause such a huge grounding problem? BTW, THANKS everyone for all of the tips!

Re: Problem with my R7

Glad you got it solved!!

What do you have in the bridge now?

There's been a JB in there for years. These two guitars have very different sounds, despite them both being R8s. It seems that when Gibson ran the Red ones in 98, they actually did a special production of them, rather than just grabbing what came off the line and spraying them red instead of sunburst.

Congrats:banana:

Not to rain on the parade, but did your other guitars have a problem in that room? If not, then there's still something amiss. If it's just the room, have the wiring checked out by a reputable electrician (they're worth their weight in gold...I'm saying that because a good friend of mine is an electrician, and my dad was a wiz at all that stuff:laugh2: )

Re: Problem with my R7

My LP Studio hums like it has single coils in it, but the humming stops when I touch the output jack plate. It was like this with the stock pickups and after replacing them with SD's, despite improved soldering over the crappy Gibson factory work. All of the soldering connections look good and I have checked the continuity with a meter, so I don't think it's a soldering problem. I have been told that the problem may be a poor connection between the tailpiece stud posts and the grounding wire there, but I haven't ventured to pull it apart to see.

I suppose you could take an old string and hook one end around a pot underneath the knob and the wrap the other end around the tailpiece, just see if that does anything.

Re: Problem with my R7

i don't know either .. all my LP has this irritating humming sound too. In fact ALL of them .. whenever I get too close to the amp the humming becomes louder.
I think its the humbuckers OR get a MXR smartGate to eliminate those noise lah

Re: Problem with my R7

Ryan,

Glad you got that sorted out. I wasn't having too much trouble with hum, but that doesn't mean that the soldering job that Luciano did was 100% right.

Still digging those pickups?

Re: Problem with my R7

I've got the same problem with my homebrew Les Paul,
but i've traced it to the switch. Sometime i'll get around to fixing it.

The sockets in that room may be wired incorrectly. I've had it happen to me too in an old house I used to live in. An electrician will be able to figure it out ... for a price of course.

Re: Problem with my R7

You can buy a handy plug-in socket tester at Radio Shack and other places. It's a great tool for checking electrical outlets -- I'd consider it an especially cheap investment if I was gigging, given how crappy a lot of bar wiring seems to be.

Re: Problem with my R7

The lead that goes to your tailpiece is the wire going into the hole by itself at 1400 in your picture. Check the solder connections going to all the pots.

Has someone messed with it? Mine have one piece of wire soldered to all 4 pots.

Agreed. Its an earth problem, the tailpiece sounds like it has teh contact against the bushing . Hopefully its attached properly or you're looking at
an expensive detil job if you need to take tht out to fix.

Wire should be on all 4 pots , outer ring 50's style as mentioned.
I do wire in an outer ring joining all.

It could be a contact problem anywhere in the circuit if the problem exists on either pup.
If you need to be told this, then I advise you "take it to a guy". DOn't play around with a guitar like this, its a masterpiece.

Wow. So ya joined up just to bump a problem that was solved 13 years ago.

How the hell does that even happen?
