problems installing pickups

I dropped my axe off on Friday to get my Jazz/JB combo put in. The tech called me today and said it was not straight forward to install them. He has to wait and consult with Seymour Duncan first. He said he tried about 10 different wiring options, but neither allowed proper function . I was referred to him from several quality musicians. Does this sound normal? My Strat has an S-1 switch with the stock humbucking Black Cobra/Sidewinder combo. Don't you just solder the wires on where they came off of???

Re: problems installing pickups

Welcome to the forum. Well, that S1 system has a lot of interesting tones in it.

The main difference is that Duncan uses different color wires than fender.

There is a simple conversion code, but you're tech probably doesn't know where to look, or he was too busy to get to it and he's giving you a line.

www.guitarelectronics.com will be a good site to clue him in as to what goes where.

If you decide to give up on him, drive on up to Jacksonville. I'll put 'em in for ya for free. ;)

Re: problems installing pickups continue

Has anyone changed humbuckers on a Strat with an S-1 switch? The guitar tech called me tonight and he can't get my two SD humbuckers to work in phase?? He contacted Seymour Duncan, and apparently none of the schematics they have available are specific to a S-1 switch. He went to guitarelectronics.com, but still he said that this is a unique situation. He has tried about 15 different wiring combinations, but none of them allow the Strat it's pick up switching capabilities. I understand the color codes are different, but why is this so difficult. I am picking up my guitar tomorrow, this delay is killing me. Arrrgghh!

Re: problems installing pickups

Maybe a mag flip like a PRS is order. Why didn't he call Fender though?

Re: problems installing pickups

He said that he cannot get an answer from technical support? I am going to call Fender's 800-488-1818 number tomorrow. I sure hope I can get to the bottom of this.
