ProCo Rat 2 Metal?

Not a specific type of metal, but you know, further than rock, I have a boss ds2 (for rock tones)Is the rat quite similar to a ds2? Would something like a metal muff do the job of general metal better, or is the rat good at metal?
Thanks

Re: ProCo Rat 2 Metal?

It depends what kind of metal. I use a regular, common Rat 2 for NWOBHM, glam, and hair metal types of sounds. For thrash I'll use different stuff. I don't really play the more modern "brootalz" styles.

Re: ProCo Rat 2 Metal?

The types of metal would be classic metal, thrash, and modern.
If neither the rat or the metal muff would do it, could I have some suggestions? Thanks!

Re: ProCo Rat 2 Metal?

I use stuff like:
  • a Marshall JVM
  • a Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 18
  • Mesa Throttle Box
  • Mesa V-Twin
  • Tech 21 U.S. Steel
I'd also check out the Mooer micro preamp pedals. Some of the demos sound pretty sweet.

Re: ProCo Rat 2 Metal?

The Rat 2 is for all practical purposes the same as a DS-1.

It is for goosing a distorted Marshall 800. It is not a great stand alone Metal noise, and certainly not modern/brutal/etc.
The Metal Muff is an over-the-top Uber Drive that will turn a Fender Frontman 15 into a seething stack of DOOM.

I love both - but I don't think either is what you need. What amp are you playing, and is it being used clean, slightly overdriven + pedal, or driven hard + pedal?

I currently play:
Mesa Stletto
Marshall VS100

and for pedals - I really don't use them. The amps have two channels.

But - my stable includes:
*Joyo US Dream
*Catalinbread Supercharged Overdrive
*Boss HM-2
*DOD American Metal
*Metal Muff w/ Top Boost
*Washburn Stack-In-A-Box (<= That would my goto best 'thrash' pedal. Crank the gain and tone towards treble and :headbang: )

It's a fender bassbreaker 15, don't know how I would set it, most likely clean or light crunch

Re: ProCo Rat 2 Metal?

I don't know how far down the metal scale it will go, but a rat into a bassbreaker (Marshall flavored) will sound pretty darn good.

Re: ProCo Rat 2 Metal?

The most metal I would be looking to go would be something like the level of Metallica, would rat or metal muff get me there? Or are there any other suggestions

Re: ProCo Rat 2 Metal?

Metal MUff for the newer Metallica.

But yeah Rat + Bassbreaker would sound pretty cool in a basic hard rock kind of way. But Not a newer Metallica way at all...

Re: ProCo Rat 2 Metal?

Rats are super cool, but can tend to be on the fuzzy side at higher gain settings. They also make great boosts on the lower gain settings. I think for what you are asking, there are are better choices out there. The Palladium is great, although a little pricey. Others to check out would be the Angry Charlie, Suhr Riot (you can get clones for ~$30 on fleabay), Wampler Pinnacle, and a couple hundred others. If you are good with a soldering iron, check out www.generalguitargadgets.com and check out the Guv'nor clone, the BSIAB2, or the Ibanez SD9 kits, any would get you in the ballpark.

I managed to get a (imo) great tone to play Metallica stuff (MOP tone mainly) out of my metal muff. I also have a tubemeister 18.
