ProCo RAT. From Santa.

I got a RAT for Christmas today. It's a pretty sweet sounding box if you ask me. Use on clean and you can do all kinds of stuff like OD and Fuzz. Use it on a cranked marshall and you're on MTV in 1989. Use it on an acoustic channel or simulator and you can do all sorts of stuff. And it will still clean up when you turn your guitar down quite nicely. Anybody else have one?

Man, i love my Rat !

(albeit, mine has the LM308 chip in it !)

If you like the RAT now, try out the Keeley RAT (normal Rat with the origenal 80's LM308 chip in it !!!

Re: ProCo RAT. From Santa.

Great pedal! I built my own and then tweaked it further and made it even smoother sounding.

Re: ProCo RAT. From Santa.

I usually use tube amp overdrive, but I have an old Rat around for fun. It's the only distortion box I really like.

Re: ProCo RAT. From Santa.

Yeah, he uses the old, big one. His Little Richard Strat even has a bunch of L-shaped dents down by the bottom strap button from bashing it into that Rat.

The one I built is a copy of the original Vintage RAT and then I did some other stuff inside of it to enhance it a bit..:27: :smack: :laugh2:

I built a vintage rat as well. Greaaaat sounding pedal. Nothing beats the original LM308's!

Re: ProCo RAT. From Santa.

Could anyone point out to me any songs that have the RAT in it?

Scofield uses it in many tunes... Fat Lip solo is a great example and so is Wabash. But, he uses an old pedal and it is not the same.
www.ratdistortion.com has sound samples that give a general idea.

I've tried Rats many times and I am not a big fan BTW... I like players who use it, but something doesn't feel right when I play it (not only because it's only me and not Beck). I have the same story with ES type guitars...

Many of (if not most of them) Portishead songs have Rat in it.

Just look at the LIVE in NYC DVD, you can easily read the word Rat on the one stomp-box !

(i use mine as an OD - never go past 1 o'clock [dist. mode] on mine)

Re: ProCo RAT. From Santa.

I cant wait until my parts from SmallBear get here. I ordered em like 2 weeks ago the same day as I placed a huge mouser order, the hollidays musta slowed Steve down. I've got tons of parts for a RAT inspired project in there. Cant friggin wait to breadboard it up though and mess with some values.

Re: ProCo RAT. From Santa.

i used to have a rat2 sometime ago........nice pedal but i hated the fact it sucked all the bass from my guitar.........so i changed the chip to the original LM308N........well that was a huge improvement not only in the bass department (it still sucked some bass but not as before) but in the general tone of the pedal.

Easy fix just increasing cap values in the input and tone circuit of the pedal...Pretty early and simple overall circuit also.

Joe....Last year I ordered stuff right around the same time as you and ran into a snag,in that it took longer to get stuff....He catches up after the holidays though. He's a great guy also and I've bought quite a bit from him since his inception.

Re: ProCo RAT. From Santa.

Give us some song examples to answer the question above about what songs have a RAT used...

Jeff Beck started using a Rat right after they came out (mass production started in 1979) and contintued to use them pretty steadily up until he started using JCM 2000's. A classic example of Jeff's rat tone is the entire Guitar Shop album...Jeff's rig on that record was a prototype JB signature strat (with 2 point trem, roller nut and locking keys) that only got used on "Where Were You" as well as another Strat or 2 and a Tele or 2 (the Tele's were used mostly for slide) these guitars are loaded with pickups Seymour wound for him and went through a rig that consisted of a BF Twin Reverb and a BF Princeton reverb (cranked to max) pushed wiht a Pro Co Rat that was on almost all the time and controled from Jeff's guitar(s).
