Proco rat pedal

Re: Proco rat pedal

I am goning to say NO...that said, if you have a new Rat it has a different chip from all the ones I have. When Pro Co made the switch from the LM 308 chip I tried one of the new ones and hated it...however the old ones are my fav dirt box ever...I never leave home without one!

I thought you never leave home without 3-4 of them????:chairfall :chairfall :chairfall :chairfall :chairfall :chairfall

Belive it or not, Im actually down to only having 2 of them at the moment!:27:

I was bidding on an older one on ebay last week but the damn thing shot up over $150 whioch is just crazy!

Re: Proco rat pedal

I went to an electronics shop yesterday and i was lucky to find a IC LM308N chip. So tomorrow i will try and swap the ic my rat currently has with the LM308 chip to see how this will improve the situation.......Any tips regarding the operation???? Is there any need for other mods to the circuit of the rat in order to accomodate the LM308 IC ?????

So maybe I shouldn't tell 'ya that I just paid a shade under $60 for an old one?!?

BUWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I love the lowend response when I've got the gain cranked almost wide open, but then it's a little too fuzzy if that's even possible!

It seems like there are NO bad settings which is amazing...

Where would you stick the knobs to cop an early Billy G. kinda vibe?

Re: Proco rat pedal

Just finished modding my rat............i replaced the old IC with the LM308N which is the chip that old rats are coming with and :omg: :omg: :omg:     THE DIFFERENCE IS BIG..........no more weak bass, much better distortion sound, much warmer...................i recommend all newer version rat users to go find the real LM308 chip and do the mod.......it's easy and will give life to those newer crappy rats............

Re: Proco rat pedal

Mine is a little loose/muddy, but the tone is killer. I'm into more 70's style distortion so it sounds decent to me. If you're looking for a metal pedal I can understand why you're not happy; the Rat is NOT a tight metal style pedal. It's a squishy classic rock pedal and it will color your tone.

I have an older one that I paid even less than $60 for but that was a killer deal, I like them and have had several and am always looking for more...at a good price!

I think that a RAT does a nice job at getting BFG tones anyway but FWIW, I keep the Distortion at a good bit less than half with the tone around noon...give or take.

I keep telling guys...the LM308 is THE RAT tone...nothing else, just the LM308!

My thoughts as well...

Re: Proco rat pedal

I just opened my Custom Rat (clone) and wanted to see what all this bloody chip-fuss is all about.

Why would any one want to screw with the internals if even my Rat sounds so good ?

So, after openning it, i saw why you guys say the new ones might sound crappier than the "origenals" . . .

. . . even mine is fitted with an LM308 chip !

But now i want to hear how the new lesser/inferior Rats sound like ?

OT :

. . . whats the deal/thoughts on the new, "YOU DIRTY RAT" model ?

Does anyone you know own/use it, and for what !??

Re: Proco rat pedal

The YDR uses germanium diodes, the "regular" Rat uses silicon, and the Turbo uses LEDs. That's straight from one of the guys at Proco. The differences in the voltage drop of the diodes (the point where the diode starts conducting, hence clipping the signal) and the relative "softness" or "hardness" of the edges accounts for the different outputs and "compression" of the sound.

Re: Proco rat pedal

Thanx, "devastone" . . .

. . . will that be the ONLY diff. in all three pedals or do you think that these are some other small diff's in the board ?

Re: Proco rat pedal

I was really impressed with the DeuceTone RAT, but I would rather just cascade 2 of my favorite ODs or distortions to match the sample settings they provide.

Re: Proco rat pedal

I had two Turbo Rats on my board for years and I loved the way they sounded. Here's the thing: I actually chose the Turbo Rat over the regular Rat for the low gain setting. I would set one with almost no gain, the other about half-way up, and then for leads i would turn them both on. That sound was big, fat, and had sustain for days. The real bonus was it was QUIET. Hard to believe, I know, but I swear it was probably the least amount of noise for that much gain that I've ever found. I never turn the gain on those things up past half-way or 1 o'clock, though. for whatever that's worth. I'm a Rat fan.

Re: Proco rat pedal

All of the Keeley RATs get the 308 treatment. The gain knob gives such a dramatic variety of sounds. I usually keep the gain low, but when you crank it, you get a strong fuzz, but chords still articulate fully, unlike other fuzzes.
