Prog/ambient metal EP about space.

Hey guys! This is my EP "Contact Light" http://tizzer.bandcamp.com/ I'd love to hear what you guys like, what you don't like, etc. I'm a self-taught player and producer, so any tips you've got on recording are appreciated as well.

A little background info on the music: I wanted to make an EP with a concept, meaning I wanted it to have a story. The song titles are all quotes from astronauts either during their space flight or about their space flight after returning to earth. I kept it vague intentionally because I want people's imaginations to take over. Also, the last song is the sound of my e-bow battery dying while recording an ambient track.

Re: Prog/ambient metal EP about space.

I thoroughly enjoyed this -- very unique blend of post-rock and progressive metal. Reminiscent of Devin Townsend at times, at other points it reminded me more of mogwai or Godspeed You Black Emperor! And then you have those riffs that sound like At the Gates or old In Flames thrown in, and man... great stuff. The production was very well done as well, and my only criticism on that front is that the palm mutes on some sections of "I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small" sounded less present in the mix and needed more thump/girth. Dunno if that's because the double wasn't quite as tight as other parts or what, but it really doesn't detract that much. This is definitely one time I'm glad a metal album doesn't have vocals -- I'll definitely be listening again. Thanks for sharing!

Wow thanks so much man! Glad you enjoyed it! I'm flattered that you used Devin Townsend in the same breath as my music, haha. As for the palm muting in "I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small" I know exactly what you mean. The biggest struggle of mine in mixing has been getting the drums and guitar to interact in a way that's punchy and balanced while also feeling natural and "real". I'm getting better every day though! By the way, don't hesitate to download the EP for free if you want a digital copy :)

Hah -- well it's obvious Townsend has had an influence on you. I hear lots of similarities, particularly the big wall of sound parts. Do you mind sharing what tuning you used? And thanks for offering the album for free! I'm gonna take you up on that.

I used lots of different tunings actually. I'm kind of all over the place with that sort of thing. Tunings go as follows:

1.Let's Go! - D standard (DGCFAD)
2.I feel fine. How about you? - D standard with the low D dropped to A (like heavier Mastodon tracks) AGCFAD
3.Look at that, you son of a *****! - drop D (DADGBE)
4.I'm coming back in... and it's the saddest moment of my life - Same as track 2 but a whole step up (BADGBE)
5.I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small - Same as previous track (BADGBE)
6.I suppose they're going to make a big deal of all this - I think D standard but it's really the pickups and dying ebow battery making the sounds.

Also, for you or anyone else that might be unfamiliar with bandcamp, if you want the EP for free just click "Buy Now" and enter "$0" as the price. Thanks again for being interested!

Self taught? You are an inspiration.

Listening again, and I say that this is the sort of stuff to inspire me to take my playing and production to the next level. How did you record this?

Re: Prog/ambient metal EP about space.

I'm taking that it was individual tracks mixed down and not live. Yeah, I know, duh. It's just that I am aiming to get this from a live recording. I figure that if the musicianship and equipment is there, that it is possible.

Definitely possible, but I know for sure I couldn't get a sound that good recording multiple instruments live in a room. That's way beyond my level haha. I recorded all this stuff by myself, so it had to be individual tracks. I just mic'd up my amp for the guitar parts, and went direct in through some line 6 POD software for the bass. The drums are programmed, but eventually I'd like to try recording a drummer, or learning to play drums better myself. Thanks again for the kind words! Makes me that much more excited to make music.
