Programming beats & MIDI controllers

I'm terrible at programming beats. It takes me hours to do a single drum track. Its a constant game of guess and check. I hate it. Thats mostly why I never end up recording anything.

So...I'm thinking about using an external MIDI controller to trigger DFHS. This one in particular caught my eye:

I figure, just grab a pair of sticks and drum away. Can it really be that simple? Does anybody program in their beats in real time using this method?

Re: Programming beats & MIDI controllers

I suck at drumming, so I do all of mine by drawing them into Reason, but if you have some drumming skills than this would probably work fine.

As an alternative, have a look at Addictive Drums. Great sounding drums, brilliantly programmed midi files, drag and drop simplicity. http://www.xlnaudio.com/

I'm with Wah wah, drums are really hard to do well. Starting with a good midi beat and tweaking is a good solution.

Re: Programming beats & MIDI controllers

You can do it with an E-kit just fine... problem is, since you're not a drummer, you'll probably spend more time matching midi notes to a grid than you would otherwise spend programming them by hand.

I'm always happy to offer assistance when it comes to writing drum parts or schooling you a bit, bro ;).

Re: Programming beats & MIDI controllers

Eh, I've had some experience with drumming. Man doesn't own a kit for 3 years and not pick up on a few things ;). Unless he never plays it. Which isn't far from the truth...

I was thinking it might be possible to go through, do one take with only hi-hats and snare, and then go through it again with one take only doing the bass drum. Keep things separate, so I don't get all tripped up. Cause as it is right now, I'm just doing a guess and check method. Its too **** time consuming.

I'd like to stick to DFHS, though. Paid 270 bucks for that program...thats far too much to not use it ;)
