prolly getting a schecter damien 7 string what should i get pu wise

i'm most likely getting a schecter 7 string damien guitar (preferably the LFR model but if not the string thru) for my 20th birthday and I cannot stand emg 7 string pickups for some reason especially the passive ones.

the specs of the guitar for those who don't know are

Basswood Body
Maple Bolt on Neck
Rosewood Fretboard
26.5 scale

I want like a nice thrash bridge pickup, heavy, articulate, intense. neck wise i'd like to be able to play with a jazzy kinda sound clean with a creamy kinda sound when heavily overdriven/distorted (think chris poland).

my first thought is the X2N7/Air Norton 7 (i am aware that i would most likely need the body routed but im not sure what size emg's passive 7 string pickups are). if anyone else wants to chime in and help i'd appreciate it.

TY

Well emg HZs are the same size as real EMGs for 7-strings so regular passive pups won't fit really(emgs are wider housings). I guess getting a luthier to fill all the stuff or custom pup rings to fit on the rout would be a lot of money for a rather cheap guitar when added in with the cost of the dimarzios.
I'd say either get a set of duncan blackouts(the make them in the emg housing size) or real EMGs. i know the dual 707 set in my Hellraiser sounds killer. But considering what you want tonewise a 81-7/60-7 set should be cool

i thought they discontinued the 81-7 and i never knew they made a 60-7 nor have i really seen one, i've wanted to try the 60 (more-so the 60a) but agaub uve bever seen anything other than the 81-7 and the 707 (85) and emgs website doesnt list anything other than the 707 and 707 tw.

looks like im gonna have to bite the bullet with probally grab some emgs for this one.

edit: i just checked musicians friend and they do indeed have the 81 and the 60 so nevermind,

how does the 60 sound?

The 60 is rather fat and smooth, but with a very single coil like attack to the notes. Listen to the soundclips on the emg site, they are quite close to what i hear from the 60.
imo it makes a great jazz pup in the neck for fast runs and clear chordwork

how does the 89 sound in split mode? i've owned an 85 so i have an idea of how it would sound but im assuming the 707tw would sound a bit different though. im thinking of the 707tw for the sc sounds but the 60-7 looks to be my preference for a neck if i had to keep the emgs

Re: prolly getting a schecter damien 7 string what should i get pu wise

getting custom pup rings made would be pretty cheap, it certainly wouldnt break the bank

scott you got any places to look where i could get them made kinda cheaply?

Re: prolly getting a schecter damien 7 string what should i get pu wise

The split mode on a regular 89 is an SA, which, incidentally, is my fave strat pickup for live work.

Re: prolly getting a schecter damien 7 string what should i get pu wise

I'd just go 707's and call it a day.

Re: prolly getting a schecter damien 7 string what should i get pu wise

i don't really care that much for the 707's in the guitars ive played them in

Maybe they will sound different in yer guitar, I dunno!

Those are the only 7 string pickups I like, so that's all you'll get from me.

J-diddy! OUT!

i sent you a PM with his contact info. hope it helps

Re: prolly getting a schecter damien 7 string what should i get pu wise

I had a Schecter 007 Elite that I put a Duncan Custom 7 in, and I really liked it... very articulate, tight, and good for thrash.

Re: prolly getting a schecter damien 7 string what should i get pu wise

ive heard a lot of guys on here complain about the tone zone sounding crap, how does it sound to your ears?

Tone zone was good in my thin, bright guitar. Beefed it up. Don't know how it would be in a darker or even regular toned guitar. That being said I still prefer duncan's tone over dimarzio. Is there a 7 string model of the distortion? Cause that would work well I imagine.

there isn't, as i posted in the OP the main ones i were eyeing were the X2N and Air Norton, wasn't really interested in the evolution since i had one in a 6 string and it wasn't what i liked (neither in any other guitar i've played one in).

a basswood 7 string wouldn't be that bright i don't think, it be a bit more leaning towards warm
