Proto Cosmos

hey guys

heres the latest hit from AugmenteD records :laugh2:

this is a tune called Proto Cosmos, it was written by keyboardist Alan Pasqua.
its considered somewhat of a "standard" for fusion nowadays, so i had to do it. this is one of the heavier fusion things i've ever attempted and the rhythm is confusing as crap so be gentle with me :D

i got the backing track from Scott Lerner he's an excellent jazz musician and he's been on this forum too for a while. so props to him for sharing this backing track with everyone.

i called this a beta version because im not realy experienced in this sort of playing, and with this specific tune aswell, and im going to attempt it again in a while.
the start of it has the melody of the tune and then i just improv. over the thing :burnout:

you can get it at

i'll be glad to hear reviews and critisicm.

Re: Proto Cosmos

Well brilliant as usual.....
Maybe loosen up abit, make it more sassy??
Dunno you got the guitarruns from hell :D ....but maybe a bit more loose and agressive digging, would be the icing on that very nice cake of yours.
Loved the sound, very warm and fat.

Re: Proto Cosmos

thanks bro ;)

i could hear where some "digging" would be cool here but it shouldnt be excessive because the track should realy flow. agressiveness would add some ups and downs to it i can expect. cool thinking, i'll try to do it more in that sort of way for the next take.

Re: Proto Cosmos

Scott Lerner is awesome, I downloaded all the vids on his site and most of the MP3s.

Yeah thats the only comment I would make, sometimes it sounds like you're cramming notes in, but only on a few of the licks.

Apart from that awesome track, very nice tone.

Re: Proto Cosmos

you guys should check Allan Holdsworth's and Greg Howe's versions.
they me meak sound like an ant in comparison :D

Re: Proto Cosmos

Very nice!! Great choice of tunes first of all, Proto Cosmos is one of my favorite fusion burners too! I used to play it myself in a band in my late teens or so, twas fun as I recall.

You had some really cool melodic phrasings in there more times than not. The thing I'd work on is learning to allow open spaces in your soloing, sometimes those brief silences can be a great setup for something very jaw-dropping, plus giving the song room to breathe and actually adding to the momentum. Sax players have to learn how to breathe and pause, I think more guitairsts should learn some of those same principles. Sometimes less notes can make a huge difference in a solo.

Another thing you might want to look at is throwing in some wide-interval arpeggiated stuff along with the more consecutive/linear phrases. That'll turn some heads.

Excellent guitar tone too, just the right mix of cutting and fluid!

Keep up the good work, always nice to hear that tune again! :cool2: :headbang: :bigthumb: :yourock: :approve: :bigeyes2: :firedevil

EXCELLENT words owl, you are most wise.
i realy need to work on those things, sometimes i unknowingly play realy cluttered-like because i got a ton of ideas and i feel like i have to throw em all at once :laugh2:
thanks alot for the kind words.
sax players DO need to learn to shut up, some of those heavey be-bop guys just stand there for an hour and go wadababadbabadbabadaba and if you dont dig that sort of phrasing it usually makes you go "piii!" :smack:

actually the next step im headed too in phrasing is just that, sometimes the right arpeggio at the right time could realy sound sweeter because it has more depth and sits better on the chords sometimes.
at some point i'll guess i'll have to get some crazy symmetrical interval licks ala shawn lane, its absolutely crazy!

Anything I can do to encourage and help a budding player I'll gladly do. You're very welcome. You're at a very good stage right now where little by little you'll start to find your unique voice. I can relate to the having a ton of ideas and wanting to toss 'em out all at once thing, went through it myself, it's that wonderful adrenaline rush when you make major breakthroughs, don't lose that, it will serve you well as you learn how to pace yourself and control the flow of ideas. The other danger is to over-think and over-analyze (a very bad trap to fall into :saeek: ).

It's great to see you're thinking ahead and defining some things you'd like to try. The best music comes out when you allow it to become as natural as breathing.

Re: Proto Cosmos

um....wow.....not much more i can say, great playing, good tone too, i think these guys are correct about maybe sometimes a slight pause or break would enhance the piece, but this is a minor concern, that was awesome!

Re: Proto Cosmos

thanks guys

this was recorded as usual with my very beloved POD 2.3, using my Ibanez (AKA "Queen") on the bridge position.
this POD sound is actually pretty new, and its using the bloody rectified #1 model (supposed to be a tremoverb) :D
i realy dig how this "amp" sounds in the POD, so i just messed around with it on rather low gain settings etc and the tone that came out in the end is very to my liking.

god bless Line6

Re: Proto Cosmos

yum!
you are an inspiration 2 us all!
maby the track could be longer and then you could spread the idias out and make gaps!
only critasism is that you dont sound stoned enough! only for the fact that you could use some realy cool hendrix style held bends etc to add texture. shreding was great tho!
thank you for this clip

guy

ps. i wana get a line6 ext pro, would you recomend this?

Re: Proto Cosmos

thanks

i dont play hendrix style :)
POD XT's are sweet, compare one to a regular 2.3 one. they both kickass you gotta decide which one you like more. the XT definatly has more possibilities tho but in just plain tone i dig the 2.3 more

Re: Proto Cosmos

Very impressive technique & great energy.

Just a comment about the improv: It sounds a little too vertical. Meaning, I hear: "ok, I'm on this chord so I'll play stuff w/ this scale." Instead of hearing a lot of melodies that travel horizontally through the chords changes.

That's a very interesting point of view.

Re: Proto Cosmos

You could mop the floor with me with a SINGLE NOTE!!! Wowzers! :saeek: You're at least 10x better than me, so I don't think I'm really at liberty to give any real advice, but have you ever tried throwing chords between lead licks? I can't do it for beans, but my guitar teacher does it and it's ****ing amazing. I bet if you learned that, you'd take it to a whole nother extreme and leave us with soiled underpants once again! :) :saeek: Keep'em comin'!
