prs 3 way wiring

Hey Y'all-
I'm trying to wire a PRS custom 24 w/ trem and HFS pups to use a 3-way istead of the 5 way, and no coil tapping options. Just master vol, & tone. I have the black wire of the treble pup, and the white wire of the neck pup going to the switch, the other black and white from each pup going to ground, and the red wire of each pup is insulated and not attached to anything. The output is very low, and almost sounds out of phase or something. Real thin. What am I doing wrong? Thanks y'all.

Re: prs 3 way wiring

Thats sounds like you are using the coil split wire instead of the hot wire for the pup and running only one of the coils. Check the schematic on the PRS site to determine if this is the case. I can't recall the color codes on those pups.

Re: prs 3 way wiring

I have looked at the shcematics from the site, and as far as I can tell (I understand this crap just enough to be dangerous ;) ), i have it right, which is what confuses me. I guess I'll just try all the other wiring options and see if I can't stumble upon it. Thanks

Why aren't using both blacks or both whites for ground and hot? Sounds like you have them out-of-phase. Just use both blacks for ground and both whites for hot.

Re: prs 3 way wiring

if you go to the website it says that the color code is different for the two pups.
Sounds weird to me too.

Hmmm . . . that is kinda odd. I guess, at this point, you may want to reverse one anyway just to see if that cures the problem.

Re: prs 3 way wiring

They each sound weird on their own also- would that fix that problem as well?

Re: prs 3 way wiring

That means its probably something else. I know that PRS wiring is a bit weird, but I don't know it well enough to tell you what to try next. Hopefully, one of the PRS experts will jump in here.

The reason that is the case is that PRS neck pups are reverse polarity from the bridge models. This is necessary to facilitate the various combinations of coils and keep them all hum cancelling.
