PRS and Extended ranges aside,

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

in recent years I've found myself preferring shorter scales but I grew up playing strats so they also feel like home for me. I dunno.

Baritones I can't really get used to.

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

I am really enjoying some longer scale guitars these days, but I'm too much of a gear whore to choose just one.

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

The guitars getting my playing time for the past 5 years are all 25.5. I don't own anything shorter scale than 25".

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

When I'm playing just rhythm stuff, I like 24.75". But once I start doing stuff past the 12th fret, my big hands prefer 25.5" or else I start having issues. That said, despite the bending being tougher, my 27" scale 7-string Agile feels surprising comfortable to me.

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

I don't really feel much difference until trying to solo up high on the neck. My fat fingers seem to screw up more stuff high on the neck with shorter scale guitars.

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

24.75. I grew up on Gibsons, for solos, rhythm, drop tunings. I now have a Neal Moser 24.75. I can't stand Fenders.

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

I really like every guitar I've played which has a 24.75 neck. For some odd reason, I only own one with that neck length, of 11 guitars, 10 of them are 25.5. My two previous 'mains' have been 25.5 too.

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

My #1 has always been 24.75 and I prefer that scale, though I do own a few 25.5.

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

Action and string gauge being equal, Long scale feels more conducive to blues, you have to work harder to bend the strings, the process is blues inducing by itself. Short scale makes me want to shred, everything just feels too easy. Some musicians have said they like a guitar that fights back, it gives them muse. Long scale tends to do that.

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

After 25 years of abusing my hands and fingers working on cars, I prefer shorter scale guitars. My fingers don't move like they use too.

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

24 3/4" always seems like home because I started out playing on it. Although I've owned 25 1/2" scales the whole time over the last 5 years I've gotten very comfortable with it. This all came about when I learned it wasn't the scale that bothered me as much on the majority of them as the rounder radius many of them use. In fact over the last 2 years I've had a preference for 25 1/2".

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

I have 24.75, 25 and 25.5, but my fingers clearly prefer 25.5 overall, especially in the upper register.

Re: PRS and Extended ranges aside,

I suppose I started out with a 25.5'' length (my first guitar was an MIM Fender Strat) and that's really been the most comfortable thing for me. I did like the 25'' scale of the McCarty and I got by with the 24.75" Gibson stuff, but the Gibson always felt a bit "stuffy" compared to the PRS and Fender. I know that sounds ridiculous, but that extra .25'' just feels a bit better on the PRS and I like the Fender even more.
