PRS Custom 22 vs 24

Whats the difference betwen the Custom 22 and 24? Besides the obvious differences like the number of frets and the pickups... does it sound and feel the same?

Re: PRS Custom 22 vs 24

  1. Neck carve. Most 22s have the wide fat neck. Most 24s have the wide thin neck. 22s can come with a wide thin and 24s offer a "regular" neck that is slightly narrower at the nut.
  2. Neck joint. 22s have the larger neck heel.
  3. Bridge. 22s have a stoptail option. 24s only come with trem.
A 22 is going to have a somewhat deeper voice due to the pickups (type and neck pickup's location) and stiffer neck. Playbility of each depends on your preferred neck carve and bridge (trem or stoptail)

The Custom 22 has a shorter neck (of course) and that gives it a deeper tone than the 24. Another factor is that the 22's come with a wide/fat neck as apposed to the 24's wide/thin or regular. The thicker the neck the warmer the tone.

Both are fine guitars.

They just about summed it up. I might add that you should play the 22 fret before buying it. The heel is way too big for my tastes.

Of course, I prefer a neck through, so what do I know? :laugh2:

I have a 22 and yes it is a bit cumbersome to hit the last 4 frets. If you use the last 4 frets a lot the 22 might not be you best choice.

I recommend a Custom 22 with Trem, Wide-Thin neck. That is a sweet guitar once you get the pickups figured out.

Should do. I believe that why they're saying it has a deeper tone due to the pickup's location.

If you like Gibby's, go with the Custom 22, wide-fat neck, and the bridge of your choice. If you like shred sticks, go with the 24 and the wide-thin carve.

That's a very smart way of looking at it. I thoroughly recommend a pair of 59s for the CU22.

Re: PRS Custom 22 vs 24

I've had my share of PRS's, including Custom 22 wide fat, 24 wide thin, and a few McCarties. I agree with everything that's been said, but I think the McCarty is the best of them, mostly because Ted McCarty (ex Pres. of Gibson) made all the changes that helped the design, IMO. If you put the same pickups in all the PRS models, the McCarty would sound the best, IMO. And even better if you spring for the best 10 Tops with solid rosewood necks. They're all stellar guitars, any way you slice it though.

Thanks for your help guys... Yeah, I'm in the market for a new guitar. Kinda still hung up over the Gibson vs PRS choice. Driving me crazy actually. Just can't make up my mind.

The neck joint is intrusive on the CU22? But its a double cut... can't be anywhere as bad as a Les Paul. Haha.

...or a Strat, or a Tele, or most any non neck-through guitar ever made.

Common misconception... while true, the harmonic is in a different place as soon as you fret a note ;)

THe deeper tone (@the neck) is simply a product of the pickup being closer to the nut.

Re: PRS Custom 22 vs 24

moreso than tone, neck profile and whatnot, I prefer the 22 cos the neck joint is more stable...PRS ,IME dont have the most stable neck joints as is, and its very easy to get out of tune if you are an agressive/animated player with the 22/McCarty and the 24 is worse..almost as bad as early 60s SG

And I'm w/ GJ, McCarty is def the better guitar out of the three.
