prs custom24 bridge pup

I'm using it with my 3-channel dual recto. It sounds kinda bright, thin and the low-end sounds fuzzy, muddy IMO. I maybe swap the bridge pup with a Duncan. Which Duncan could give me a warm, tight hard rock/thrash sound with high definition even in high gain. Thanks guys!

I'd try the Custom (very tight and clear, a bit compressed), the Full Shred (bright and crunchy, better dynamics) or the Screaming Demon (bright, slightly scooped mids, very "percussive" sounding.

Re: prs custom24 bridge pup

What pickup do you have and what guitar is it in?

I've played on a few PRS HFS pickups and your discription isn't even close to what I have been hearing. I am guessing that either that is not an HFS in that guitar or that it is installed wrong. By your description I'd have to guess that the pickup is split and that you are running off of one coil.

If it is in fact an HFS, make sure the red wire isn't connected to anything.

Once I know what guitar you have, a pickup choice will be easier.

Thats not really true Robert. On a stock PRS The red wire will always be used on both the 5 way rotary and the 3 way switching. I agree with you though that that description is nowhere close to what my HFS equipped Std24 sounds like.

Is this just troubleshooting suggestion?

Re: prs custom24 bridge pup

Sorry guys, that's my fault. I mean to compare with my EBMM JP6 and PRS custom22, my PRS cu24 /w the stock bridge pup sounds kinda bright, thin and the low-end sounds fuzzy, muddy. So I need you guys' suggestion.

Re: prs custom24 bridge pup

I had a Custom 24 and although I liked the neck pickup, the bridge is a little bright and middy. Not bad, but Duncans sound better.

The problem is that PRS flips the magnet in the bridge pickup so that the rotary switch allows the proper phasing in some of it's selections. There's a thread in the Vault about how to properly install pickups in a PRS rotary guitar.

I'd suggest following the instructions in that Vault thread, which Robert S wrote. I think you'd be happy with a C-5/59 or CC/PG.

Re: prs custom24 bridge pup

In my CU24 I've got a SD CS CC/JB2 hybrid. It sounds a lot warmer to my ears. You might want to look at a C5, or CC. Are you wanting a sweeter sound, or a hard edged sound?

Re: prs custom24 bridge pup

Thanks so much, that thread really helps!
My custom24 has a 3-way toggle switch, do I need to flip the Duncan pup's magnet?
I'm wanting a warmer, sweeter sound. I've heard lots of good things about the C5 and the CC but I never tried them. From the threads I searched here, the C5 and the CC are my style I think. I'm not sure if I only swap the bridge pup, whether my different positions would be unbalanced in terms of volume..
Would you guys compare the 59,JAZZ,PG to the custom24's neck pup? Thanks so much!

The pickup on the Main Page is my PRS Custom 24. I have a Custom Custom Trembucker in the bridge and a Pearly Gates in the neck.

Kat Dyson used it at UGD and raved about it.

Re: prs custom24 bridge pup

Overture, does your CU24 have a sweetswitch or any other switching/splitting options or is it a standard 3 way switch setup with bridge. bridge/neck and neck positions.

If its std wired, you wont have to flip a magnet but you may need to switch the black and green lead connections for the SD pickup in the guitar, depending on what is in the neck.

Overture, I wanted exactly what it sounds like you want.

I went through a JazzN, A2Pn, 59n and a JB2/CC hybrid/ Distortion/Custom hybrid, and C5/JB hybrid in the bridge. Later I pulled the PRS pots because the taper seemed a little weird to me. I got the sweetest sound from a 59 neck, and a JB2/CC Hybrid with 250K pots. Since PRS' are thinner and, due to the maple's thickness, brighter guitars I found that the 250K pots really help smooth out the tone. I also took out the treble bleed cap, that made a lot of difference too.

Hope that helps!

Hi Robert,
My CU24 has a push/pull tone control with 3-way toggle switch. Right now I'm not sure if I only swap the bridge pup, whether the different positions would be unbalanced in terms of volume. Thanks!

Thanks so much Luke Duke. Would you describe the tone of your JB2/CC Hybrid? And do you think the 59 neck has a smoother tone than the stock neck pup of the CU24? Thanks!

wow that's pretty cool Evan~ I love your CU24's finish.
I never tried the Custom Custom, does its low-end sound loose to compare with the stock bridge pup of the CU24? and I'm wondering how a Pearly Gates sounds to compare with the stock neck pup of the CU24. Sorry I've so many questions.. Thanks!

The JB2/CC is very very similiar to a custom custom but with a bit more juice and all the mids stand out pretty well, but especially the low mids.

59/Vintage Bass comparison? I can't be objective because I put in the 59 after I took out the treble bleed cap. So yes it sounds smooth, but is it because of the cap? or the pup? I can tell you that the Vintage Bass is a hotter pup, and honestly I thought it was pretty good, but I had 2 white pups to put in.

I went directly to the Jazz, which was much more articulate and chimey, not as dark. From there I went to the Alnico 2 Pro which I liked better, it was sweeter, but still a bit lacking in the bass department for my taste.

The low end is much sweeter, but much looser. It is an Alnico 2 based pup instead of ceramic. If you are wanting the PRS benefits, but with more of an old LP sweetness look at the PAFs, and the Custom Series.

Re: prs custom24 bridge pup

I think the Custom series is where it's at for you in a PRS.

The HFS has some JB kinda tendencies in a PRS CU. I play one, and I have found the CC has my favorite mids and attitude, makes the guitar sweet yet focused. With the right amp it's pure METAL. I found the Custom 5 amazing, but it lacked the rude mids. It made the bridge sound HUGE, with lots of nice bass and BALANCE. My favorite all around pickup for rhythm and lead if you need to do both and not slash over a band. Unfortunately, I do slash over a band so I use the CC for now. The Custom with its ceramic might be the way to go if you want an aggressive tone altogether. I prefer non-ceramic mags.

I will also say the Vintage Bass is nice, but I prefer Dimarzios in my PRS neck positions. I have had a great tone with them.

I think the deciding factor for me would be your amp. I have found (take it easy folks, personal opinion here:) ) that nothing sounds right through a Mesa Dual recto but a hot ceramic pickup, its the only pickup that to my ears keeps it sounding tight. I would suggest a Duncan Distortion to replace the HFS, although I am surprised at your description of the HFS, cause that in iteself is a hot ceramic yes?? Also, as others mentioned, the Custom is a great choice as well, but not as hot as the Distortion.

Wanna hear a Duncan Distortion through a Recto?? Pick up the new Stryper live CD, (7 weeks in America or something like that) I beleive Oz Fox is using that exact setup.

As a side note, I used to play a LP Custom with a Gibson 500T (hot ceramic) through my Recto and it was the tone of the Gods (if metal is your thing)......
