PRS doesn't make lefties, so ...

Neither PRS or PRS SE make left handed models.

Does anyone else make a PRS-like guitar (set neck, double cutaway, carved top, etc.) that's any good? I'll consider anything from an outright clone to something in the general ballpark, ideally something in the $700 - $1000 range.

Thanks.

I am suprised that they don't make lefties! That sucks big time, not cool at all!

Deans would be a good alternative.

The Dillion 500 series hardtails seem to get great reviews. Heard a lot of bad stuff about the trem models though. Everyone pretty much says the same things. Great build quality but crappy electronics. So $500ish for the guitar. New pups and electronics and you're right in the $700 range.

The Hamer SATF's look cool but I've never played one. I've read mixed reviews on the Hamer import line.

Rondo still has 1 PRS style guitar on their lefty page. It's blue and runs about $280. The specs look good, but it's got a 24 fret neck and that's a stopping point for me.

Back in 05 Paul said something along the lines of they would no longer cater to "fickle" left handed guitarist and they stopped production of left handed models. It really is to bad on his part. If he'd offer a couple models of the SE line in lefty, he'd probably make a decent wad of cash. Most other companies offer something if not a lot things in that price point for lefties. He refuses.

You can still get a lefty PRS. But they are from the Private Stock/Custom Shop line only and the starting price is $7400.

Re: PRS doesn't make lefties, so ...

Slightly off topic (and I have told this story before...apologies to repeat customers):

I play left handed, so I am always on the lookout for good guitars. I was on tour in the late '90's, and the band I was working with was given a PRS endorsement deal. We actually visited the factory and they gave us a factory tour, and we saw the computer operated routing systems, which were really cool. Got to watch while a guitar materialized out of a block of wood. I noticed the xyz coordinates on the computer screen whipping by as it controlled the router (more on this later).

Later that day, I asked why they did not make left handed guitars, and they gave me the standard line about how they would need to retool everything to make lefties, etc., etc., and that the market was too small bla bla bla. I then commented that all they needed to do was reverse x and y on their computer router, and it would produce a left handed guitar. No retooling necessary, just some reprogramming. I'm not sure if what I said made any difference, but about 9 months later they started offering lefties, but no longer , I guess, because we are so "fickle".

"Fickle left handed guitarists"? I guess I'll stick with Gibson, Fender, Gretsch, and Epiphone since they are apparently able to put up with us "fickle" lefties.

Word! I have done some work for 9Finger on here (who is lefty). I just flip my template upside down and go to work.

I really like PRS and their guitars, but that is one of the most un-cool things I have heard. I would think someone who makes such nice guitars would have a better understanding of the situation.

I wouldn't take one customer's account of the situation as gospel...especially a lefty

It's not immediately apparent whether they're abailable in left-hand, but a lot of the other models are; try Greg Bennett Ultramatic (UM3) --- I had a UM4 (had a Wilkinson Trem) and it was just great. I loved the neck and the feel of the body, it was all very good for a mid-priced guitar.

They come with graphite nut, Grover tuners, Duncan Designed pickups, and a few other "player focused" details.

and here's a shot of the UM4 I had:

P.S. Yes, that is a flametop Epi LP with a Bigsby

Why would I lie about something like that? Nobody was asking anyone to take anything as gospel. I merely stated what I had read. I have nothing to gain from doing so. It's not like I'm a PRS hater and bash them all the time. I happen to think they are really great guitars. Am I disappointed they don't make anything in lefty? YES! Is that going to cause me to tear a great guitar company down? NO.

And what does playing lefty have to do w/ my comment? To me, that was just insulting. If you want to troll somewhere, go back to the sound room.

Those Carvins do look pretty sweet. I like that they use the Wilkinson trem.

Get a Gibson Les Paul! If that's not your style go with Carvin.

I already have a Les Paul-like guitar.

They don't feel exactly like a PRS, but they feel darn good and they play just as well. In terms of quality, I'd say Carvin has roughly 90% the consistency that PRS has, but the good ones are as good as anything else out there. I love mine:

That looks bad freaking ass. Can I hear it on any of the tracks you have up on MySpace?
