Is there a way to get that cool dragon inlay .. or any dragon inlay on something i could put together from warmoth. i mean i know ed roman does somestuff but what about other custom shops like jackson?

basically i want the dragon inlay on something other than a PRS.. not that i have a thing against a PRS i've never played them.. its just.. i don't know the dragon inlay is cool

Re: PRS Dragon Inlay

Finding a luthier to do the work shouldn't be a problem.

The question is, can you afford it? Do a google search. Email for price quotes.

Do you really want to spend as much, if not more, for the inlay as you did for the guitar?

Re: PRS Dragon Inlay

Somebody wanted me to recreate that inlay about 2 years ago. My "old Inlay lady" quoted me 2500 EUR (currently about 3000$ US), and she tends to be on the cheap side. That Inlay is one of the reasons the Dragons listed @ 16k$. Even in colored plastics instead of the (mostly rare and expensive) original materials it would have run only about 5-600EUR less. Inlaying into wood is painstaking and intricate work, and the Dragons are definitely on the "more hefty" side.

I´m talking about the Fretboard inlay, BTW. I don´t think either of us wants to know what the newer "full body inlay" would cost. And the customer Opted out in the end after all because the Inlay would have cost more than the rest of the axe ;)

Re: PRS Dragon Inlay

I don't know about the inlay but those Dragon I and Dragon 2000 PU are simply amazing for a power blues tone.

That's the kind of work with the "if you have to ask you can't afford it" thing going ;) .

Yep. Those people are the folks that don't balance a check-book monthly.

Hey, KGM, who is in your avatar pic? Is that the same girl from the old Forum? Sorry, I know that is :offtopic:

Re: PRS Dragon Inlay

If you want a dragon inlay check this guy out. He made this guitar from a block of African Mahogony (no warmoth body here). He is a real good friend of mine and does amazing work!!! The inlays that are used in PRS guitars a cut from a very thin piece of shell. In the event the frets need work you will usually sand through the inlays. Cris uses solid pieces of Abalone, and mother of pearl. It is very thick and holds up ver well for years!!! LOL

While this may or may not be true (Ive never sanded through PRS inlays on a refret), you also just hinted onthe main problem: Over 50% of the Dragon is NOT shell, but coral, Turquoise, Gold, Mammoth Ivory and other funky things. Just OBTAINING them can be hard enough, but actually inlaying coral or stones requires quite a bit of experience.

BTW, that guy does seem to do pretty nice work, but I wouldnt even trust myself doing an Inlay as intricate as a dragon, just because of the materials involved. It´s definitely up the alley somebody that specializes in inlay work IMO. IIRC even PRS themselves don´t do the dragon Inlays in house, but outsource them to another company ;)

Re: PRS Dragon Inlay

Zerberus you are right!! Most manufaturers do not do the inlay work when intricate. It involoves a large amount of skill, patience, and artistic ability. The Dragon inlay that I mentioned earlier took the Luthier about 15 hours to do. Most large manufaturers simply do not have the manpower or the resourses to handle this type of project. To me it is way to busy any way. How do you find your way around with all that under your fingers!!!

Re: PRS Dragon Inlay

this migh be a little :offtopic: but jackson has a really cool Flame inlay, i am really gasing for a KKV neckthorugh guitar w/ ghost flames and those inlays, i would think fire is a more difficult design to do in wood, and that costs about $1100 on the Jackson forum so i cant imagine how much a dragon one might cost u :saeek:

Re: PRS Dragon Inlay

According to Ed Roman....

"Original PRS Trademarked Dragon

This picture included here so buyers will be able to spot the Trademarked one.

Guitars with this Dragon on it have sold for more than $40,000.00 I know because I have done it myself.

The real joke here is that while all the other Dragons I have seen are totally hand made and sell for about $3,000.00 The trademarked PRS Dragons.
All 250 of them were done on a CNC Machine by Pearlworks )"

Re: PRS Dragon Inlay

Just noticed, that´s probably about as close to a price quote as most will wanna get :D :D :D

BTW, if Ed isn´t wrong (as people often are ;)), this is the company that does ´em.. http://www.pearlworks.com/ (i don´t recommend it for dialup users, though)

Just looked at the site, nice stuff, and Ed was right about who did it ;)
