PRS Mikael Akerfeldt model

Hello everyone.
I am looking to buy the PRS Mikael Akerfeldt model and am planning on replacing the pickups in it.

I have know idea what pickups to go with because I have been reading that the different types of wood that the body, neck and fretboard are made up of effect how the pickup will end up sounding.

I know that there are other things that effect sound also but in terms of sound,
Dio, ozzy, metallica, pantera.
Anywhere along those lines.

Thanks

That's a sweet lil axe over there.

Now unto pickups:

Pearly Gates (N) / Screamin Demon (B) - my personal fav
59' (N) / JB (B) - standard les paul style combo
A2Ps

Bugera 6262 212.

I know a lot of people who say that the jb is very brittle sounding and I am not a fan of the 59.

Would the screamin demon produce a nice solid distortion sound?
How is the pearly gates in terms of sound?

He's a big Full Shred user, that pickup set seems like it would satisfy your request for veratility to hit all those bands you listed.

Re: PRS Mikael Akerfeldt model

Does fretboard wood make a difference in how the pickup will end up sounding?

Re: PRS Mikael Akerfeldt model

In terms of the Screamin Demon' do not let the name mislead you. It's a passive moderate output pickup. Very good articulation. The Pearly Gates neck is one of my favorite neck pickups, that and the A2P. It cleans up real well when cutting back volume and is sweet for leads. That's my setup for My Les Paul Studio Deluxe and serves me quite well.

Re: PRS Mikael Akerfeldt model

Pickups are in fact vital to a guitar but so is an amp. Not having exp with your amp, I can not comment. However using that same setup and playing through a VHT, Mesa Recto, Marshall DSL, 800, TSL and JVM, I can tell you that it rocks hard core.

Re: PRS Mikael Akerfeldt model

I just put a JB bridge/Jazz neck set in my PRS SE singlecut, which is more or less the same guitar (same wood). It's awesome. Nothing brittle from the JB, and I left the stock pots. Great classic rock tone on medium gain, monster on high gain. The jazz is very nice and clear, great blues tone on mid gain.

THey sound great together on clean.

Re: PRS Mikael Akerfeldt model

Coming from a long, long time 5150 player, the JB is too loose to pair with a 5150. I'd go with a Custom 5 instead.

Jazz in the neck or Screamin' Demon if you want something a bit hotter.

It's also worth nothing that Åkerfeldt hasn't used a Full Shred since the Deliverance/Damnation albums - all the guitars he's gotten since, which have become his main players for recording and touring, have the stock PRS pickups.

Fredrik, on the other hand, runs a JB/Jazz set in all of his PRS axes.

Re: PRS Mikael Akerfeldt model

The spec of the PRS MA model is pretty similar to that of my Yamaha YSG from the Eighties. (A kind of PRS/Yamaha collaboration that pre-dates the establishment of the PRS factory.) On this guitar, I have been mostly using DiMarzio EVO2 (bridge) and Al Di Meola signature (neck) pickups.

He's using them on the Roundhouse CD/DVD. :cool2:

I just put a Full Shred in my mahogany LP Studio Faded. I've only played it through my Line 6 Guitarport so far, but I'm not getting the "vowel-y" sound it supposedly has. I LOVE that vowel-y thing in my pickups, so I'm a bit disappointed it doesnt seem to be here. Maybe I need to tweak some heights or something.

why are you considering changing the pickups on a guitar you haven't bought yet?

Re: PRS Mikael Akerfeldt model

ZOMBIE THREAD ALERT!

To be fair the stock pickups on this guitar are pretty good. I liked them.
