PRS Problem

Hello people, I've had an issue with my PRS SE bridge position. Originally I tried a Dimarzio x2n and it was too muddy for me and not the sound I was after. So I swapped it out for a bill Lawrence L500XL, and it now sounds shrill and far too harsh for my liking.
So I'm turning to the forums to come up with some ideas. The guitar is normally tuned in Eb or D depending on my mood. I've heard good things about lace pickups, but I'm not going to jump in for a £100 plus pickup. I tend to play hard rock and grunge but I also have been known to try to play metal. The pickup will be paired with a Dimarzio Chopper in the neck. I'm looking for a warm sound, with enough grunt if I feel like metal playing. The one pickup I'm not interested in is the dimebucker purely because it's too close to the l500xl. All suggestions welcome.

Welcome to the forum!

I wish I had some advice to give regarding the Lace, but I've never used any of their products and don't know much about them. A few people here feel that the Whole Lotta Humbucker is just about perfect in PRS SE guitars. I've never used it, but I hear it's very well balanced. Higher output pickups tend to have less clarity in certain guitars, so it's not surprising that your X2N was muddy. A Transition may suit you well, as ibis suggested. They're marketed as high output pups, but a lot of people say they really aren't. In any case, from what I hear, they sound BIG. Lukather described them as very organic. I saw a video demo of a guy using them to play Sweet Emotion and they're very warm sounding for a ceramic magnet pup. Check it out:

Thanks for the video. It's cool to hear it in use. I must admit I over looked this pickup when it came out so it'll be cool to revisit it

Re: PRS Problem

As a PRS SE Korina owner who has fitted a set of WLH pups to it, I can recommend them wholeheartedly. As Drunken Bowling says, they are very well balanced and have plenty of output. They're worth a try for sure.

Re: PRS Problem

Not in a PRS SE, got one in my Yamaha MSG though. I'd have a hard time describing it though as it's back in the UK - not seen it since December, if I played it then.

Re: PRS Problem

Haha I'll go hunting for it and try it out for you. A friend of mine suggested the mark morton dimarzio dominion because it has boosted mids. Again anybody had any experience with them?

If you wanted boosted mids, look at the JB.

The Alt-8 is another option.

Like I encourage anytime that is asked about, check YouTube for a video by Tone Fiend doing a demo of the Alt-8.

Re: PRS Problem

Will do cheers fella. I know Rob Chapman did a kind of review, but he was busy using the cool rails so I couldn't get a decent idea how it sounds

Re: PRS Problem

I've heard a lot of good things about alnico 8 magnets in general. What does it sound like?

I am really bad describing sounds. But trust me, it's really powerful without being too heavy. I use it with a coil split push/pull and it rocks. It allows me to play from classic rock to modern metal!

The other thing is its clarity. Powerful when overdrived and clear at the same time, what else do you need?

However, I must say that this magical sound comes from a LTD-LesPaulish model. When I tried this Alt 8 pup in my Superstrat it was just muddy as hell. I discovered that the Strat has 250K pots, so maybe that's te issue. I am going to get a 500K and 1meg pot in order to see if that helps, because seriously, I would love to have that pup in this particular guitar.

PD: That or buying a Screamin' Demon. They seem really interesting and similar sounding (from what I can hear in the videos) in superstrats.

I've got 500k pots in so that's fine. I feel I need less treble and more mids. George lynch has a new pickup out with arcane and that has a Alnico 8. I think it'll boil down to the dimarzio dominion and the alternative 8.

Re: PRS Problem

DiMarzio Norton is a perfect match for the Chopper. I've had them as a set.

The Norton is amazing in singlecut guitars.

Re: PRS Problem

Found a dean ascension pickup for £45 on eBay. Any input on this choice? I'm gonna go for This, a dominion or a dimarzio air norton. I will be buying a alternative 8 for Another guitar of mine. Anyone any final thoughts Before I decide? Thank you for all your input today.
