Imagine you have a new guitar :banana:and this guitar is a 2011 PRS SE custom 24 in purple burst. You are very happy, but the pickups, although not crappy, are not so satisfying. What would be your choice for that guitar? it should be a versatile guitar (from clean jazz to classic metal), used for rehearsal and as a backup of my main axes

Probably an A2 Pro (or similar) in the neck and a Custom in the bridge.

Edit: FTR my main guitar in the 90s that I still have is PRSish and has the classic Jazz and JB and I played everything with it.

I don't play jazz. I do play some metal on occasion. But on my Custom 24 I went with a 59 in the neck and a Screamin Demon in the bridge. Great setup in my opinion.

Re: PRS SE custom 24 2011

So at the moment a good combo should be a neck pickup with vintage output and A2 magnet and the classic custom. I already have a A2P with short legs in my spare box, while don't have any experience with PGn. Don't you think the PGn is too dark in a mahogany body?

Re: PRS SE custom 24 2011

On my SE Custom 24, it's not dark at all. I find it very articulate, light touch bring out the cleanest of tones, and harder picking gives me great response when using gain. If I want mellower tones, I have it wired for parallel using a push/pull pot. Then it gets brighter than in series, and gives a flutey tone on gainer settings that I really like.

Re: PRS SE custom 24 2011

Just forgot, mine has a flame veneer top, that probably makes it slightly brighter. Does yours have a full mahogany body?

I've got a 2014 SE Custom 24 with veneer top. I put SD Seth Lover pickups in.
I love this guitar now. Warm, yet articulate is how I'd describe them. Picture is with the stock pickups. 20151017_155158.jpg

Really don't know. It's hard to find out all the specs for that model (2011). It's not weight a ton so I assume there is a certain weight relief job applied.

Re: PRS SE custom 24 2011

I'd go with a Jazz and Custom. Any A2-based pickup doesn't sound good to me in a 24 fret guitar. It won't be tight enough for metal, either.
