PRS SE Standard

I have a friend of mine that has a 10 year old son that wanted to learn to play. I took my buddy to the local guitar shop I deal with and we got his son a PRS SE Standard. $340.00 out the door. It was a trade in, but it looked like it was never played.

I'm extremely impressed with this thing. The stock pickups sound more than adequate and the playability is outstanding. I wouldn't mind having one myself :)

Re: PRS SE Standard

PRS SE's are the BEST guitar for the money bar none!

Re: PRS SE Standard

a lot of people wail on the SEs for being crappy but they def are not. i read an interview with Paul and talked about how the SEs were the first guitars they were having built overseas, so he went over to the facotry to check stuff out. he gave a few classes and showed the workers how to he wanted stuff done. apparently he said that the people building them were good builders...but nobody had ever come from the companies and said, do this like that, do that like this etc. said he checked the first few off the line and was impressed

Re: PRS SE Standard

The major "problem" is that they are thin, so you can't really drive them into the sound zone that you'd expect from a full mahogany guitar.

Having said that, I will probably do my P-90 evaluation by buying a SE Soapbar or Soapbar II.

Re: PRS SE Standard

I bought a used PRS Santana SE and while the body doesn't have great acoustics (played w/o amp) it sounded Ok with the stock HB's. I did change them out to Rio Grande Fat Bastards (HB size P-90's) i would have gone with the Phat Cats, but didn't know about them at that time. It now roars and has a decent tremelo system (fender style). Yeah, I say these are good guitars for the Bucks. (I paid $200 at my local Pawnshop)

I agree, the SE single cut would be much better if the body was a bit thicker. Still an awesome guitar, I'd probably be playing one now but I can't jive with those the chunky neck.

Re: PRS SE Standard

I'm with Rowan; like everything about them, and i would have one, except that the neck profile does not fit agree with my hands. I'll be checking out the new Mira model when it's available; I have heard rumors that the neck profile is different on those.

Re: PRS SE Standard

I have a Santana SE, and while it sounds and plays pretty good, I can't get along with the smaller frets. It is definately NOT thin sounding.

Re: PRS SE Standard

I know three guys who work/worked at guitar stores, two are excellent techs who also play live quite a bit. All three bought PRS SE double-cut (HH) guitars. These are guys who have played everything and worked on everything. The latest guy said he put Seth Lovers in and now it sings amped as well as it does acoustically.

Re: PRS SE Standard

The keyboard player in my band has one. I'd swap out the pups if I had to use it as a #1 but the axe itself is really good.

Re: PRS SE Standard

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of All-Mahogany guitars. IMO it has to have a Maple Top as well (and preferably an Ebony Fingerboard if possible)...

Re: PRS SE Standard

All the ones I've tried are very nice guitars for the money. Unfortunately I can't compare them to the real thing because all the stores around here protect PRS guitars with their lives, meanwhile more expensive guitars from other brands get touched by everyone who walks in the store.

Re: PRS SE Standard

ive always wanted to buy one a put a custom/59 setup in one of those double cuts. and id deffinately get the orange!!

Re: PRS SE Standard

The Santana SE is another guitar I don't see. Guess they also got it discontinued.
There is a local shop I saw having it, worth it looking into it?
