Re: PRS SE vs S2 vs CE
I've played a bunch and own an SE one. It was $200, brand new, on closeout and I wanted something with P90s. The tuners need to be replaced and the pickup isn't all that good, but it works. Most of the other SE guitars that I have played, have given me a similar impression. They work, but I wouldn't be happy with them as shipped. The S2 feels better in most aspects to me. They tend to feel more like a complete guitar as opposed to a neck that could be attached to any body, as a lot of lower end imports feel to me. If you're content with the feel of a $499 SE and want to know if it's worth the upgrade to a $1300 S2, it probably isn't worth it for you. Now, if you're comparing a $799 SE and $999 S2, I'd go S2 every time. As far as the CE, that's the PRS that loved back in the early 90s. To me, it's in a completely different class as the SE, there simply is no comparison. Is it worth 4x as much? Only you can determine what something is worth to you, but it all depends on what you plan on doing with it. If it's going to be a beater that you play from time to time, save your money. If you are looking for a guitar to be "the one", you're more likely to find it in the higher end product lines.
I have a couple basic tenets of guitar buying
1. You can find a great guitar at every price point, but the ratio of great guitars to good guitars improves with the price point.
2. You get a better quality product at the low end than ever before.
3. Play as many guitars as you can and go with the one that speaks to your soul, regardless of price point. You are more likely to play it and more likely to love it.
