There is a brand new tungsten colored Silver Sky in a guitar shop close to me.

Talk me out of it

...or tell me why it’s a great idea.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

There are a lot of other options for 'strat with a goofy headstock'.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

They are pretty, and get great reviews. But at that price, you'd have to really, really want that specific Strat-alike. I mean, you can get build a Warmoth with top shelf parts, and get it painted at a great paint shop any color you want.

Nothing wrong with that headstock

Possibly but I’ve done the whole project guitar thing in the past, and after you dump a fair bit of money into it if you ever decide to sell it it’s worth way less than what you put into it. Besides takes too long, and waiting and being worried if parts arrive in the mail. Going through customs, paying extra fees, shipping fees etc. It’s a pain, unless you want something truly specific.

I get it, but the Silver Sky isn't truly specific. It is an idealized Strat, really.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

I prefer my G&Ls over the two Silver Skys I played. G&L really is a custom shop, with a host of neck options, woods and finishes. The PRS is nice; but the Legacys, S-500, Comanche and Legacy Special are just better values.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

Ugly headstock. Ugly inlays. Ugly body sculpting. Expensive.

Order a G&L to spec instead, and you'll have a much nicer looking guitar for less money, built just as well, but made to spec.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

G&L=PRS build quality? I'd have to see it to believe it. It takes Paul a month to build a neck. I'd be surprised if G&L did same. If I wanted a strat I'd get a PRS and take it to a gig that night untested and pull it out of the case without any reservation that it would perform. In fact I'd do that with any Stevensville made PRS. I can't say that about any other guitar brand I've experienced. But I will account for the fact that I'm just a bloke from Delaware and haven't played everything. I just know I've played a lot of PRS's (them being made only an hour from where I live) and I've never played a dud.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

Go figure. I’ve never played a PRS that knocked my socks off in any way. They’re certainly not poorly built, though; that’s not my point. They just don’t stand out above many other well made guitars to me...and they are ALL SO UGLY.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

Not a fan of the Silverstar. To me it's no where near a Suhr, Anderson or Kiesel Delos as a high end Strat. That is really all it is a PRS that's a Strat wannabe. Like PRS guitars own a 07 Custom 24 and play it out often. It's the classic PRS IMO and a cool guitar but I just don't get the Silver Star. There are a LOT better Strats for about the same $ out there!

I mostly agree, except I do think PRS builds beautiful guitars. But as much as I want to replace one of my Les Pauls with a PRS, I've just never been able to bond with any of them, be it a Santana, 513, 594, McCarty, Custom 22 or a Paul's guitar. I've even thought about getting a Mira as an SG substitute, but just couldn't lay the money down. I'm sticking with my Gibsons...at least for now. And yeah, my G&Ls' quality was right there with what I saw in the Silver Sky.

The PRS models come so close, yet miss so far.

Why do we post these things here? We all know no one is going to help us say "no"

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

Here’s the thing... if it scratches the itch, then do it. It’s really a “duh” statement, but if most Strats leave you wanting for something and the Silver Sky is perfect, you’ve got to get it. If there are a any major hiccups or things you want to modify, I’d go for something else.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

the silver sky is a great guitar, a modified strat suited to one persons preferences built by one of the most consistent high end builders out there. ive seen a bunch of em on stage and they always sound amazing. if you like it and have the money, do it. it will hold its value as well as anything in a similar vein

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

It may take some time, but if people can get used to the Wolfgang and EBMM headstocks, then the PRS horns on a Strat will eventually become trendy.

Personally, I think these are great guitars and I like that PRS took on the Strat theme head-on. I find the fact that they were able to implement signature PRS designs into the classic Strat format kinda cool. If I were to buy one, I would play it as-is and be completely content.

Granted, I would probably build myself a pair of Warmoths before spending the same money on a Silver Sky, but you can already find them used in the $1700-$1800 range on Reverb and Guitar Center's Used website.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

I don't know if anyone doubts the quality.
They might doubt John Mayer, or the price, or the mish-mash of looks on this thing. I believe it is well made, though. Not my thing, but I don't look for Strats, either (though I grew up playing one).
If you can save the money and can swing it without going hungry or homeless, do it.

But don't get it just for the color.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

You guys didn’t talk me out of it :thumbsdow

Actually, I made the thread to see if there was still controversy surrounding this guitar. I guess there is.
I had no intention of buying a Silver Sky until about 2 days ago when I saw a video of Rick Beato (who I’ve been following for a few years) do an interview a year ago with Paul Reed Smith. In it Paul takes out a white Silver Sky and plays it a bit, a few more videos and reviews and I was pretty much sold.
Originally I was looking at getting an Eric Johnson Strat, the ones released back in ‘08. I remember fiddling on a candy apple red one in a music store back in 2010 and it was one of the few guitars that I’ve seen, then held, that floored me. The Silver Sky was giving me the same vibes and the tones and neck profile were exactly what I was looking for.
I randomly looked online at the guitars in my local music store and they had one. Talked to the manager on the phone about it. They received it March 12th and have been closed to the public for the past 3 weeks, although curb side pickup is available. I was hesitant to buy a guitar for that much sight unseen and only got photos cause no customers are allowed in the store. He assured me it’s mint, which it is, and hardly anyone played it cause they’ve been closed to the public for almost a month. They also have a 30 day exchange or refund policy. So I bought it. Picked it up this afternoon, plugged it in when I got home and it was exactly what I was looking for. This is my first PRS, the quality and attention to detail is awesome. I also emailed PRS customer service with a question and got a reply back in 4 minutes. But the thing that’s sold me on the guitar is the amount of tones you can get out of it, and the feel of the neck. I wanted something that would cover a lot of bases.

Re: PRS Silver Sky: Talk me out of it!

Kramer, I’ve never held one, but I’ve never really been interested in one either. Have you given Suhr guitars a serious look? Guys that own them rave about them. They have some good options, and a reputation for high quality as well.

Forgot to mention Suhr. I have actually held them, and I think they’re beautiful guitars but when I had one in my hand although it was awesome quality it didn’t give me that vibe like this guitar does or the EJ Strat. Edit: I tried out two Strat Suhrs and a Tele.

Suhr and Kramer beak necks are the same headstock shape. Suhr guitars even have the Floyd Rose nut half way off the shelf like the old Kramer’s beak necks like mine that were retrofitted Floyds.
