PRS Stepping into the 8 String Business?

They did one for Tosin Abasi a while ago and then did one for Mark Holcomb. Now they have a limited run. Maybe to test the waters for a future production model? Unfortunately, I was able to see the price on these and I could buy a small country for that.

That is a private stock model...always big $.

I think they are making a SE version too. Something popped up in my yootoob feed recently.

That's where the real profit would be. The private stock is probably just there for the halo effect. Can't imagine a lot of 8 string players forking over that kind of scratch.

Beautiful guitar though. And it features Mark Holcomb's signature SD's.

I'm very glad to see PRS stretching out more. I don't want them to get into the bind Fender and Gibson are, where any innovation pisses off the nostalgia crowd. PRS is still young enough that it doesn't have to be bogged down in its own history. And although the 7 and 8 string thing will likely never be for me, that's an important growing part of the guitar world.

Re: PRS Stepping into the 8 String Business?

I think PRS will be free to innovate so long as Paul is alive.

Re: PRS Stepping into the 8 String Business?

Innovation in the form of the exact same formula plus 2 strings?

Custom 24 - Maple, mahogany, rosewood, 25" scale, PRS pickups, 6 strings, tremolo bridge, PRS composite nut, V12 finish, no binding.
Custom 24-8 - Maple, Ash, Blackwood, 26.5" scale, Duncan pickups, 8 strings, string through bridge plate, bone nut, nitro, maple binding.

Same formula?

sort of.

Re: PRS Stepping into the 8 String Business?

I think it would even sound better with like a 30" scale, but I am happy they didn't keep it the regular 25" one. That Private Stock looks great, but is probably 10k.

About $12k.

Mark Holcomb, who's PRS 8 string is the basis of this guitar, has said that the 26.5" is actually really good sounding for standard 8 tuning. Plus the shorter scale length is easier to explore different tunings such as BEADGBEA. On a 27, there's no way you'd be able to tune that high A properly.

When I think of extra strings on a guitar, I just assume that they're to tune lower for the br00tz. I like the thought of a high A string - it makes a lot of sense.

One of my friends is looking at a Halo custom 8 string for those purposes. He likes the idea of a low B, but an extended range guitar can and should also extend up, not just down. I'd like to think that I could use that properly, but I doubt it.

Re: PRS Stepping into the 8 String Business?

Kinda funny, saw an interview with Paul, year unknown where he had made the 8 for Tosin and they asked him (it was Namm or something) if he was going to start doing 8s and he said, Never, this was a one off... haha

Re: PRS Stepping into the 8 String Business?

12k, huh? Wow. If I wanted an extended range instrument, I'd go for the NS Stick instead.

That was earlier this year. I think he did the one off for Tosin and then one for Mark and realized that his 8's are probably great instruments.
