PRS - Tremonti vs. Custom 22

Hey all,

Breaking down and going for a PRS in the next little while. Could anyone who has owned or played both of these give me a little comparison? Can't find anything not sales-y on the net. My dad has the 22 and i love the feel, but reading about the wide flat neck sounds nice...

Mostly interested in hearing about body balence, neck comparison, and sound between the two.

Thanks!

Re: PRS - Tremonti vs. Custom 22

I've owned both. Had multiple Custom 22's and a Tremonti model.

The Tremonti is obviously a more Gibson weighted and feeling guitar, but sounds really good with Mark's signature pickups. They are pretty hot.

Of the Custom 22's I've had, I've replaced the pickups in some, left the Dragon II's in my main one and have even installed EMGs.

I'm not sure what style music you play, but the Dragon II pickup is effing nice in my opinion. I would plug in Chrous and Delay pedals into my Triple Rectifier and could do P.O.D.'s "Youth of the Nation" almost to the T, going from cleans to lows and the Dragon II would do it all. It's not as hot as the Tremonti pickups.

I preferred the wide thin neck carve, however one of my 22's did have a wide fat neck carve, and it wasn't that bad, but you could feel the difference.

You'd just have to try one to see if you like it to be honest.

I too preferred the wide thin carve on the 22 being that I want to be able to fly up and down that neck. I haven't played the tremonti but have played the singlecut and found it too be much more gibson oriented whereas the 22 is more of a cross between a strat and a les paul

Perfect! Thanks for the thought out responses, API and Brock! That's a little what I had feared about the tremonti- for that kind of coin if a Lp is what I was after It would be in range. The Strat-Lp hybridization is what's always captivated me!

Guess what I should have mentioned is that it's a good two hour trip each direction to test any of these guys out - but i just need to quit whining and do it! :burnout:

It seems like I should look in to the tremonti anyway, just to cover all the bases. I'll also try to track down a custom 24, I think.. And a wide thin:) the 22 my dad has is the standard carve (same as wide fat?) and it's still by far my favorite neck. I dabble around with guys in everything from blues to metal, but primarily do ska/reggage so hearing that the dragons will snap clean to grit is a definite plus.

Thanks again!

Re: PRS - Tremonti vs. Custom 22

Hm.... So I've hit a wall again... Definitely leaning towards a custom... But am debating the 24 vs 22. Does anyone have any longterm experience with the two? Thing I probably wouldnt use all 24 but very occasionally, the option might be nice. Though I couldn't feel it with the demo, is the weight distribution and feel fo the neck significantly different?

Any other comments would be awesome too....

Thanks!

Re: PRS - Tremonti vs. Custom 22

I am not a fan of the Dragon II pickups in my Custom 22 and will end up replacing them unless dropping them lower improves the tone. They are thin and bright to my ears. I have them about 2/32" from the strings. Maybe they should be lower. Might try a JB for some thickness.
