PTP versus PCB

Re: PTP versus PCB

Why do people have a problem with this?? i never understood

Except that direct surface mounting is a tell tail sign of cost cutting, the valves is that little bit closer to the PCB board now.
And we all know valves running for more than 2min can get super hot.
I would rather have my piping hot four 6L6's as far away as possible from my PCB, as aposed to having it 5mm closer.

YMMV . . . that's just how i look at things.

If you mount those tube sockets on a nice thick pcb...Problem solved....Personally I like the tubes off the board and in the chassis also..

And another thing : if you read magazine write ups about these amps with direct serface mountings, no magazine has ever said anything positive about it.
You get the idea is it really frowned apon by the people in the know.

Re: PTP versus PCB

I bought one of those Yamaha/Soldano T100 heads back in like 94 or so..Both of us have owned and used this head extensively at gigs and practices...It's loaded with a ton of preamp tubes and all are mounted to the pcb...Not one problem ever since owning this amp..Not saying I Like the tubes mounted on the pcb,but I'm seeing that its doable over the long haul....We are very careful when we pull or install tubes in this amp to be sure it stays this way! ;o)

Re: PTP versus PCB

I have to say, I have heard great and bad of both. But, somehow, PTP just looks prettier when done right. Not saying mine is done "right," but it's quiet (no hum), and it sounds amazing.

Well, I agree that quiet and sounding amazing are significant products of done "right", but pretty is certainly a nice bonus:

Dude, you are light years ahead of me! I haven't even attempted a build and from what I've read wire routing is a real challenge.

Indeed it is. I have a true flying lead point to point wired amp I built in a Bogen tube PA amp case, basically a Matchless spitfire clone with a 2 band EQ, and the 7868 power section making about 35-40 watts. Looks like a rat's nest inside, but it sure does rip. Again, no real hum to speak of.
