PU Selection for my new Super Strat project

Hey guys,

I have a super light Swamp Ash body being painted at MJT with aged orange nitro as we speak.

I had MusiKraft build the body for me with a Charvel neck pocket. I am taking the neck off of my San Dimas and plugging into this body.

It will be a rocker guitar, but I definitely want some sweet sustaining thick tones in the neck position.

I have decided on using the Custom Custom in the bridge and the 59 in the neck.

Does anyone know of any conflicts with that wood and those pick ups?

Welcome to the forum!

That is a good combo. But the neck '59 isn't that thick..if anything, it scooped in the mids, although tight in the lows. You might look at an Alnico II Pro.

Thanks Mincer,

That is the feedback that I was looking for.

I'll post a photo when it comes together in a few weeks.

Hey I checked out the video on the Alnico II Pro, that pretty much nails it, in fact my guitar will look sort of like the one in the video.

Thanks for the advice.

That is a very nice pickup combo for that tonewood, especially if you are going for that EVH tone from the 1984 album. You will get it most definitely

If you want a more edgy tone with the ash body, try a JB, especially a vintage variety. Jake E Lee used them in hits Ozzy days. maybe a pretty awesome combo.

Thanks, 'Edgy' is a good description of the JB. I'll most likely try the JB as well.

The best combo of pickups I ever had in a H/H strat was the CC/APH. The swamp ash body will naturally be bright and snappy. If your neck is maple w/maple fretboard, the guitar will be even brighter. I think that reinforces the CC/APH choice. You will be able to cover a lot of rock tones with that pickup set.

Good luck.

Also a great choice, and my favorite, although I play dead clean & with about TS-levels of gain, 50/50. It is a thicker sound, but I really dig that.

Thanks guys,

I am going ahead with the CC/APH.

It is a Charvel maple neck by the way.

I'll post photos when it comes in from MJT.

Looking forward to the finished product.
Recently added a San Dimas to the stable.
Love the guitar but still fiddling with the pickups,
the video Mincer linked has some great tones.
May end up with the pups you've chosen.
Good luck and do keep us posted!

Peace,

Darrin
