Pulled apart the '59 HB. Now i'm a little stuck on the color code

Snoogles

Cranky-dologist
so i've got the '59 HB in pieces, and all the wires disconnected and ready for the 4-conductor wire

however, all of the pickup leads are in black, and i don't know which of the colored wires goes to which of the black wires. Which is the "start", and which is the "finish". also on each bobbin, one wire comes out from the side, and another wire comes out through the bottom:

i found this schematic:

Re: Pulled apart the '59 HB. Now i'm a little stuck on the color code

also, i cut off a couple strands of wire when stripping the plastic insulation. is that going to matter?

Re: Pulled apart the '59 HB. Now i'm a little stuck on the color code

well, i went ahead and assumed that the wires coming out of the side of the bobbin are the "start" wires. and the wires coming out of the bottom of the bobbin are the "finnish" wires.

if i'm wrong, and its the other way around, then what do i do?

Nope, the other way round. The start is laid on the empty bobbin and the hook wire is led thru the hole in the bottom. The finish is the end of the wire which is laid on the coil and taped. Think like a winder craftsman does.

But you can do it the other way round as long as you always connect finish of one coil with finish of the other (or in your case start with start) in the humbucking mode and flip the magnet.

so the white wire is now the hot, and the red wire is the ground.
and the green and black get tied together

If you have connected up both coils "backwards", the error cancels itself out UNTIL you combine your modified HB with a second pickup.

er...this is a joke right???

otherwise the only song you'll be playing on this pickup will be 'the sound of silence'

you know how a wire is made up of a bunch of different strands?
a strand or 2 broke off. not the whole wire

in any case, i think i eff'd something up somewhere
i'm not in a good mood right now

EFF'ING EFF
EFF EFF EFF EFF

why the eff didn't i listen to my instincts!!??

EFF EFF EFF EFF

edit: ok, i think i may have wired this pickup in parallel. cuz i'm getting both coils working. but its a really weak signal.
but i cant find any diagram that shows parallel wiring. only series wiring.

with parallel wiring which wire color is the Hot? which is the ground? and which 2 get wired together?

Re: Pulled apart the '59 HB. Now i'm a little stuck on the color code

its ok if it has 4 conductor
you can solve the problem just try the white or the red to the hot & at the same time put the black with the other wire
leave the green & bare as is

Re: Pulled apart the '59 HB. Now i'm a little stuck on the color code

think i'll get myself a voltmeter tomorrow and make sure i in fact did solder all of the wires properly to the bobbins.

Re: Pulled apart the '59 HB. Now i'm a little stuck on the color code

Just rewire it the right way so you don't have problems if you ever move it to another guitar. A few extra minutes to do something the right way won't kill you. Chaulk it up to a learning experience.

From memory, I'm pretty sure it should be:
Black to the bottom wire, screw coil
White to side wire, screw coil
Red to the side wire, slug coil
Green to the bottom wire, slug coil

Someone correct me if I'm wrong though, Copperhead?

Re: Pulled apart the '59 HB. Now i'm a little stuck on the color code

The green wire will be the bottom wire on the screw coil & red ,the top wire on the screw coil
& black the bottom wire on the slug & the white of coarse the top wire

No. The finish wire (top) of the screw coil (red) connects to the start (bottom) wire of the slug coil (white) to get series hummer mode.

So...

green = start (bottom)
red = finish (side or top)

white = start (bottom)
black = finish (side or top)
