Punk Pickups?

Re: Punk Pickups?

hey OP, do you have any recordings up? I play in a few crust bands and found that having the coil split options helps in certain parts of the song. Either way, posting your material helps the forum decipher what you're looking for AND allows some extra PR:33:

Re: Punk Pickups?

This might be weird, but I've gotten some pretty punkish tones out of the SSL-5 in my strat. I can make it sound pretty dirty with my Fulltone OCD dimed and the tone knob at around 10 o clock.

Re: Punk Pickups?

A real punk wouldn't worry about pickups. As long as the guitar makes noise...it's good to go!

Re: Punk Pickups?

I grew up on skate punk and the band I am currently in is playing that style combined with some hardcore and metal elements so I will chime in.
Amp wise, you seem to be ok for the skate punk sound....most of the bands you like (BR, Blink, NUFAN, Strung-out) use modern channel switching high gain rigs, so you are ok there.

Pickup wise it is tough to say because what works well for the guys you like may not work for you....and the pickups used and preferred is so varied!
Are you the only guitar player? If so, a big sounding powerful pickup might be the ticket a la the Invader!
Play lots of leads? The JB is a classic all-rounder with a second to none lead sound.
Cleans in your music and lots of dynamics? Maybe a PAF style ('59, Screamin 'demon, custom/59). They also tend to sound "bigger" due to contributing less compression.
More rythm oriented? The custom line....duncan distortion for more aggro!

For me, I favour a tight and clear pickup because I do alot of the staccato palm mutes and I like enough compression and heat for lead stuff. The Custom5 and Custom served my needs perfectly that way for years! Your needs might be different. Look at your playing style when deciding the pickup and go from there!

Re: Punk Pickups?

Just getting around to informing you, I went with the JB and I love it! Sounds so nice, and I definitely do not regret my decision.

Re: Punk Pickups?

I have a JB in a MIM strat that once I got it all wired up right (for the tone I was hunting) sounds great. I have a distortion in an Epiphone Les Paul that kills. I would try that as well. I haven't only because I like having different guitars with different setups. But I would think the Distortion in a strat would do the punk thing very well.

Don't get all hung up on super high output. I know that high output PUPs tend to be what is used by most punk players, but I think a more PAFish type pickup can rock the punk vibe pretty well too. I am pretty much a punk guy myself and my two favorite guitars to play are set up very differently form an output standpoint. One is the aforementioned Epi Les Paul (Jazz neck, Distortion bridge), and a Gibson Les Paul Studio (Whole Lotta Humbucker Set). Both sound great, both sound different.

For what it is worth, and I know I will catch a bit of flack for this, but I am a huge Blink-182 fan. I play trough basically the same set up as Tom Delonge now (Vox AC30 for dirt, Twin Reverb for clean). Both guitars, with their very different output levels can cover pretty much all the tones I am looking for from bright glassy cleans to overdrive nirvana. Not going to be playing any death metal with this setup (well maybe I could pull it off with the right pedals) but it works out beautifully for me.

Re: Punk Pickups?

I suggest a Phat Cat or similar HB sized P90. Or just a P90-sized P90.

P90s are a very angry pickup. Humbuckers are the guys who work out a lot and wear Tapout shirts, but P90s are that dude who's a super tall and skinny 17 year old with bad zits and an ugly haircut and a vintage Eaten Back to Life from Cannibal Corpse shirt and a switchblade comb....and a switchblade and you don't know which one he's going to pull out AND IT MIGHT BE THE KNIFE SOMEONE CALL THE POLICE

Meanwhile the typical Strat pickup is Mike from SLC Punk.

Re: Punk Pickups?

It's punk rock. Just use whatever you can steal.

This is the only credible answer in this thread. But I don't think me and Itsa are talking about Pop Punk.

I'm old enough to remember when punk was invented. Asking what pickups were used is entirely missing the point.

Artist Relations guy chimed in. Cool....Again, sad and wrong in a punk thread. But still cool.

A single coil has a very difficult time cutting it in the hardcore nupunk sound. Sure ain't unheard of, but its isn't the most efficient way to do it. I suggested p90s in case he starts getting historical.

Re: Punk Pickups?

The C5 is a great choice. It has the sound but is far more versatile than something like the Invader. The Detonator (Dunc Designed Invader) which is in the Squire TD sig is a pretty cool pickup btw.

The Gibson Dirty Fingers is another pickup that will cover a lot of the territory you're talking about too.
