Punk Tone

Re: Punk Tone

the original punk bands used terrible equipment. they weren't concerned with good tone, so if you want real punk sound, i dont think seymour duncan can help you. find some junk equipment in a pawn shop and wail away.

Re: Punk Tone

The JB is a favorite among a lot of punk guys, I think that would be your best bet.

Duncan JB. DiMarzio SuperDistortion.

If you're after punk tone, most of the sound will come from your amp, but those two pickups will help drive the amp hard enough to get the gain you want from it, along with having the midrange neccissary to get that strong mid sound most punk bands have.

Re: Punk Tone

Try a JB, if you want more treble, a Full Shred might be the ticket.

Re: Punk Tone

if you like punk, you probably like the fat distortion. So you probably don't need to worry very much about soloing, seeing as the punk I know of is all simple power chording.... gets really boring... but that's just my take, and my knowledge of punk. Try the invader out, although I'm not sure if it's what you want.

he didn't say Sex Pistols, Ramones or Misfits, he said Dropkick Murphys, US bombs and Rancid.

If I'm not wrong (which I often times am) the guitarist from rancind and the DKM's use JB's. I don't know anything about US bombs. This is pretty dated info, since, I stopped paying attention to Rancid a while ago and I never payed attention to DKM.

:hijacked: these pics are off the DKM site...
I've been with the one on the right and the third from left and the second from right, I've been dating for 10 months and shall get the mustang bass

look at 'em go! WOO! the one closest is saying, "get the JB!"

:hijacked: sorry... but... Sid Viscous used a P-bass and SVT, the guitarist used a Les Pual and a Marshall. The Ramones all used Mosrites and I don't know about the misfits... pawn shop punk rock wasn't around until the mid 80's and it died aronud the mid-90's with kurt cobain's jag stang... now... if you'll excuse me, I got a half eaten chimi-changa in the fridge that I have to eat if it isn't seafood.

the invader is, "chug," and JB is, "AH!" although, with the right tweaking, they can both sound the same.... the Invader offers more chug and output, while the JB offers more clarity and cut at flat EQs

Re: Punk Tone

I use an invader for punk rock (Rancid, NOFX, propaghandi etc.) and it works great, really chunky palm muting from it which was what i wanted, that said alot of punks do go for the JB, and the second guitarist in my band is going to get one this holidays, from what ive heard it should offer a strong enough sound, yet different enough to distinguish itself from my invader.

It isn't hard to get a good punk tone, as far as im concerned i think you just need a fairly decent axe, a Strong, fairly high output pickup and a decent amp, and im sure either Invader or JB would work for you.
