I'd bet two picks and a pack of strings that you have a bad connection somewhere in the guitar. Possibly a bad solder joint or oxidized contact on the selector switch.

Were both coils still populated with screws?

Yes, of course.



...or use appropriate pickup rings.

Would probably be tricky to mount on this one, it has the large strat-style pickguard.

Yeah, might be. I now regret not checking that before I polished the whole thing up and slapped on new strings. I did recommend the guy step up his string gauge, as the current set is 10-52 and guitar is tuned in C. If he does, its gonna need a setup anyway, I suppose I could check for any wiring issues then.
