Pup suggestions for a LP Copy?

My girlfriend just got me an Agile 3000 (LP Copy-Mahogany body, maple cap, ebony neck) to jam with in my college dorm. (So I dont have to keep my Gibson LP Classic in a College Dorm...) The guitar feels pretty darn good to play but the only problem is that the pickups are rather cheap and are lackin' what I'm used to. What combo would be good to try out? Again, I play mostly classic rock/blues.(Zeppelin, Bad Company, Cream, etc..) My ideal tone is close to what Jimmy Page had on "Since I've Been Loving You"

Re: Pup suggestions for a LP Copy?

Someone says Zepplin in a SD production pup and I automatically think of a set of 59's and to a lesser extent Jazz's. Both are fairly low output with A5 mags that get that Page Bright stinging tone. Same thing with Cream, but for bad company I'd say something with an A2 magnet like an Alnico 2 Pro, very warm. A few years back I saw Mick Ralph's LP for sale, a genuine 59 LP that had faded from heritage cherry sunburst to lemon burst.

I use a Jazz in the neck and an Alnico 2 Pro in the bridge. Together these two pups cover all of the classic rock ground fairly faithfully. The brighter A5 sound and the more middy A2 sound. They mix well too. The A2P can get a nice Led "Rock and Roll" sound, darker, more compressed. Also does nice for the Bad Company sounds. The pup will get bright but not like a 59. The Jazz neck has less bass than the 59 and makes for a clearer sound to my ears.

Hope the helps

Re: Pup suggestions for a LP Copy?

a friend a mine suggested a set a PG's to me as well, how do they stack up against a set of 59's or a Jazz neck/AII Pro Bridge combo?

Re: Pup suggestions for a LP Copy?

The pearly gates (pg) is another great A2 pup. They are warmer than the Jazz or 59 due to the A2 mag. Lots of folks like them the most due to being slightly hotter than the Seths, A2P, Jazz's and 59's. They've got more midrange and the sizzle that you hear folks refer to is the snap in the 2000 or so Hz frequency range, the range a cut or presence knob affects.

Re: Pup suggestions for a LP Copy?

After reading your suggestions, I'm considering using different pickups for the neck and bridge position to get more of a variety of sounds. The Jazz/AIIPro combo has been mentioned, anyone else have any suggestions to get a good classic rock/blues tone? The tone wizard suggested a AIIPRO/59B combo.

Re: Pup suggestions for a LP Copy?

Since Gearjoneser hasn't chimed in with his preference I'll voice it for him, he recommends a 59n C5. The C5 is like an overwound 59 with the same scooped sound. I think it would put you in the Page territory.

Alot of guys also like the 59/Custom combo. It gives you classic neck sounds and helps overdrive the amp in the bridge but it might be too aggressive sounding or you.

If you decide to stick with the A2 magnets you might also try a A2P neck and a PG bridge. Someone was touting that as a good combo a while back.

Another possibility is a jazz neck and a 59b. This would give you the smoothness of the jazz in the neck and the cut through of a 59b. This might be your best bet in a traditional output.

If I've given you informational overload I'm sorry!

Re: Pup suggestions for a LP Copy?

I tried 59'/59 combo but now use JB/Jazz for a little more tone versatilaty the Jazz is great clean The JB just as good with your lead tone

Re: Pup suggestions for a LP Copy?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I've never put in new pickups before so I wanted to get as much info as I possible could. Duncan just has so many to choose from it takes ya awhile to pick, its like being a kid in a candy store. I think I'm going to put in a 59n and a C5b

Re: Pup suggestions for a LP Copy?

I tried the C5 in my Gordon Smith Les Paul and I can't say as I was a fan of it.

A Pearly Gates, or maybe even a Screamin' Demon will do what you're asking. A Demon CAN be a little bright at times, but it crunches up well and imo is a great classic rock pickup :)

Although not my preference I know that with certain setups it can be the grail tone, I think you'll be happy with this combo.
